Alan was driving, and he didn't immediately get a good look at the sign. But Sharon did. "I could pretty much make it out at the time," she said. "It was written on both sides." Alan was a bit skeptical at first. He told his wife he didn't believe someone would actually write the "N word" on their sign. Ok, so they're pulling out of their driveway... She could "pretty much" make it out ON BOTH SIDES, while her husband was skeptical? This makes NO sense.
If something like this happened and upset me so, at the very least, we'd have gotten out of the car so I could show my husband what I saw. Furthermore, if I saw something and my husband said, "No, that couldn't have been there" I'd be ticked off at him. This smacks of the two of them trying to portray themselves as balanced and rational.
