A British government minister attacked Republican US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin as "horrendous" at the Labour Party conference on Saturday.
The outburst from Communities Secretary Hazel Blears threatens to undermine Prime Minister Gordon Brown's determination for the British government to maintain a neutral position in the US presidential election.
Speaking at a fringe meeting of the centre-left party during its annual party conference in Manchester, Blears said Palin was capitalising on people's disillusionment with regular politics.
"I just think there is so much anti-politics -- not just in this country but around the world," Blears said.
"One of the reasons why Sarah Palin has been such a phenomenon is because she's anti-politics, anti-Washington.
"Her politics are horrendous, but actually she's struck a chord with people -- 'I'm a maverick, I'm not part of those powerful people' -- and people identified with that."

LOL, I got a form email reply saying that you have to be a constituent to email him directly, it gives you a link to the PM site, but they took down the link for emailing him there. That’s rich, he’s Prime Minister, but he only will have email directly from constituents-that’s bad enough, he’s PM of the whole country-but he has the gall, as head of government of a country, to endorse a candidate in our election, but he doesn’t want any feedback from the citizens of the nation whose election he decides to have a say in. Geeze, how do you all put up with such hypocrisy and arrogance? Do you really have to wait almost two years to get rid of this unelected git?

Keep up the good work. I have made a simple error though- this woman is a LANCASHIRE LASS,not a Yorkshire lass. Pretty close these two counties. They used to be synonymous with the old fashioned work ethic. Much of it is now rust belt country.
Hazel lucked out, no clogs and cotton mill for her. (chuckle).
Blears should sort of the mess Britain is in and keep her nose out. This thicko doesn’t realize Palin was talking about cleaning up Washington. Obama is the most corrupt politician I have ever seen on both sides of the Atlantic but she doesn’t go after him I notice. Start cleaning up the City of Salford and the crime there (I’m from Manchester) and look to your own appalling voting record on abortion etc before you condemn a woman who walks the walk and talks the talk at least she had her beautiful baby!!! I very, very proud of Sarah Palin - she’s a wonderful Christian role model. You’re a disgrace as is Gordon Brown with his human-animal hybrid bill. I bet the priest at St Peter and Paul’s Church has plenty to say - just another phoney hypocrite - the world is full of them.
