Let's call it his penance . Perhaps Gods will but he has never renounced his idiotic version of that day . They were bought off. It was her family that prevented an autopsy of Mary Jo, an autopsy which mostly likey showm she was STILL alive when Ted abandoned her to her fate.

Had Ted acted responsible and reported the accident she would be alive today.

Instead, Ted slept off his drunk, tried to get a friend to take the fall and Mary Jo died.

And Teddy spent the last thirty years in the Senate instead of jail.
