Well, that’s a good technical explanation.

Would running that script be consider “hacking” or “cracking”?

I’m not sure that is right. I thought Yahoo email was exclusively Web, and didn’t offer an SMTP interface.

I would not run a script like that on a server that I wasn't responsible for. I would consider it unlawful. But it happens all the time.
