McCain spearheaded a bill in 2006 -- reviled by the right wing of his own party -- that would have allowed illegal immigrants to earn citizenship. As I recall, the bill was reviled by many, many more people than just those on the "right wing" of the GOP. One might even consider the enormous resistance to have been bipartisan.

You're absolutely correct. Most of my family tends to be on the very liberal side and they don't like the way their precious social programs are being swamped under a tidal wave of illegals.
