I hope that McCain’s Rapid Response Team can learn to respond faster than they did here.
Seriously, the story came out early this morning. I saw it at 8:00 am. Rush was on it at noon.
And McCain finally responds at dinner time?
I think the whole economic crisis thing knocked it off the headlines. It sucks that it came on this day.. but it did.
If the economic thing hadn’t happened.. this would have been front page news everywhere.
Meantime.. O’Reilly is doing a puff piece on Obama’s life.
All because Obama did an interview with him.
But come back in a couple hours and the damned stuff's inching up to the living room door.
Possible they were trying to get their ducks in a row in order to respond with any sort of authority.

Yeah. I posted it at my facebook at 6:19 a.m. and then at Hot Air when Ed put up his first thread. It seemed LIKE forever waiting for anything else to come out. I was delighted when I heard that Rush had said something..
re: McCain’s Rapid Response Team
fwiw, I posted the breaking news thread here at 5:03 am EST but I for one did not expect or want the McCain camp to respond too quickly — I may be wrong, but it hardly occurred to me to try to send it to them (though I also assumed that someone there would notice it rather early in the work day, so I didn’t worry about that angle)...... but I did not think the story could be advanced initially by the McCain camp jumping on it, or at least that would not have been useful until it had already gotten some circulation on the web and pickup in at least some major media...... it’s a delicate issue with limited information (so far) and it was better to let it get some more info and competing perspectives before anyone from the McCain campaign tried to jump into the fray.
Best to let it develop with input from bloggers and whatever MSM journalists are actually honest enough to address it. The McCain statement seems like just the right line for them to take right now, but I don’t see any added benefit for them to have made the statement early in the day.
On another issue, where all the facts are already clear and it’s possible to really hammer hard, I agree that rapid response within a couple of hours is key. But I’m not sure it would have helped in this case, and it might simply have looked (or been portrayed) as though the McCain camp was flogging the story, when they had nothing to do with it.
McCain may or may not have known that this was coming, but it would be best for him to avoid giving any indications in either case. If he drives the story in any fashion, many people will see him as the sleaze monger. On the other hand, if the story is sufficiently widely reported, decorum practically demands that John McCain can ask his opponent a chance to explain things. John McCain will come off looking like a rose whether the accusations are true or not; had he jumped into the fray earlier, he's look like a skunk--again whether the allegations are true or not.
Actually, if McCain responded in real-time, he’d leave himself open to the charge of having planted the story (whether he did or not). Dinnertime is news time - that means McCain made the primary news hour of he day.
I don’t have any issue with the timing of McCain’s response.

I suspect McCain’s Team was hooking up with sources to confirm this is how it went down.
Rush has the luxury of not having to making damn sure there is more than “he said, she said” before making a public statement.
It would have been irresponsible for McCain to just jump up and accuse without tracking down the facts. AS it was, I think his response was quick -
Good gravy....
Well within 24 hours. I'd rather McCain take the time to make sure he has all the facts than to spout off too soon and put his foot in his mouth like bambi.
