Our youngest was 50% chance of DS and we were encouraged to try again. They were wrong. He was born late in the second trimester. They encouraged to abort just before birth. He was born at 1.25# and had a ruptured colon among other problems. The encouraged to only treat with morphine and let nature take it’s course. When we declined, I was taken into a room alone and told to keep this kid was unfair to his older brother who would never have a life of his own with us caring for this kid who would likely be blind, deaf, and retarded.

Well, this kid is 11 now and plays viola. He is very bright (so good at math we call him Rain Boy). He is a constant companion to his older brother.

Brigham and Women’s took good care of that kid, but it was against their will.

As an aside, I started paying attention to DS kids when we thought he might be one. We also encountered a few as our little guy received care. I know there is heartache in dealing with a less than perfect child, but you would not know it talking to these families.

I hope Sarah gives fearful parents hope and courage.

Which totally explains why they had to call it ‘pro-choice’.

If we used the same logic, then I could kill you, because it was my ‘right’ to the freedom of choice.

They can’t use PRO-ABORTION because that makes it sound like you are actually just choosing to kill the offspring you don’t want.

The focus is changed from the subject(child) to the ego (mother). It becomes all about ‘her’ rights, and is then just an attempt to shove the rights of the child under the carpet.

IIRC, it says “LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.”

All three things the fetus dreams about, until the day of birth.

And yet they would deny that fetus the same freedoms they ‘cling’ to so dearly.

Sarah Palin has taken her responsibilities seriously. And faced the consequences for her actions, and the actions of her family.

Those who hate her, hate what she represents.

Morality, and Success.

They are used to having ‘an excuse’ to behave badly. That is why they liked Bill Clinton SO MUCH.

The really frustrating part about Down Syndrome is that the vast majority of cases have the same origin, called meiotic nondisjunction, which basically means incorrect chromosomal division.

It is the cause of about 95% of Down Syndrome cases. And of these, 88% happen in the ovum, and only 8% in the sperm. Importantly, it seems to happen more in older couples.

This is frustrating because it implies one of two things: either a deficiency disease, like folic acid causing spina bifida; or some kind of age related degeneration, or both.

In either or both cases, this would mean that replacement or repair could radically reduce the number of cases of Down syndrome, as well as the possibility of detecting the possibility even before pregnancy. Maybe with a simple blood test for both want to be parents.

This avoids the abortion issue altogether, except for those individuals who see killing babies as the goal in itself, with whatever argument just an excuse.

The other side is PRO-ABORTION not pro-choice.

Couldn't be said better, so it should be repeated.

Wow, what a story! Was it a doctor who tried to force you to abort? If so - he or she is a monster.

Think this doctor will advocate killing AIDS patients because their quality of life is diminished and their prognosis is a long, progressively debilitating disease leading to death?

“but then the story gets real weird and ugly.”

Haven’t all the stories about Sarah Palin turned out to be written that way?

Absolutely not there is to much money, research money in Aids. It's not their fault that they are infected. It was the CIA and the DOD that infected all the bathhouses don't you know?

Doctors. They never really addressed the two of us. When the two of us were in the room, they ignored me. When it became clear she could be reasoned with, they turned their attention to me.

Turns out I was unreasonable too.

Like I said, though, once the decision was made they performed miracles. And only the doctor I spoke to privately was less than nice about the whole thing.

My fear is that someday the left will conspire with the insurance companies to relieve parents of the decision. It cost $250k to get our kid out of the hospital. I could never afford that absent insurance.

That’s why we need to educate people on the value of life. It’s not a choice, it’s murder.

Dr. Lalonde said that above all else, women must be free to choose, ...

And even more above all else, they must make the choice he would approve of.
