McCain ad slams Obama, Senate Democrats on immigration
CNN ^ | September 13, 2008 | Rebecca Sinderbrand

New McCain ad blames Obama and Democrats for death of immigration overhaul effort.

(CNN) – John McCain’s campaign is running a Spanish language ad in battleground states that blames Barack Obama and Senate Democrats for the failure of attempts to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws — even though the Republican nominee and his Democratic counterpart cast identical votes in the key Senate showdowns on that issue last year

“Obama and his congressional allies say they are on the side of immigrants. But are they?” asks the announcer in the 30-second spot, “Which Side Are They On?”

“The press reports that their efforts were 'poison pills' that made immigration reform fail,” he continues. “The result: No guest worker program. No path to citizenship. No secure borders. No reform. Is that being on our side? Obama and his Congressional allies ready to block immigration reform, but not ready to lead.”

I’d like to know what else he doesn’t want the base to hear.
>>

No, you wouldn’t.

Everyone knows this is what it is. He says he’s going to support enforcement first. No one believes him, but the truth of the matter everyone CAN believe is Obama is not even *saying* enforcement first.

You vote for the rightmost viable candidate available. And move on. Immigration isn’t going to define the election. That’s very clear now.

Well we don’t even know Sarah Palin’s stance on the immigration issue at all and saying nothing sure as hell won’t win my vote.

We do.

So whatever he wants to campaign on is ok with you as long as he gets elected.

Conservatives need to make him work at least a little bit to get their vote. This is the only time there is any leverage with him. Say it now or say it in 2012. Of course by that time Amnesty will be history.

This ad matches up with how he really feels on immigration. He added the enforcement first words to placate ( read pander to ) Conservatives. Now he campaigns in a foreign language with no mention of enforcement first and hopes the base doesn't notice.

So who is dumb here?

Notice that CNN could not even get the first line in without “fact finding” that McCain voted the same as BO. They usually do no “fact finding” in the entire article at all if it is about BO. Actually, they usually also add on a bunch of negatives about Republicans / Conservatives in EVERY news item. Even the weather and sports!

Am I the one putting out ads reminding people I’m soft on illegal immigration?

Damn straight. It's no-nonsense, rock-ribbed Conservatives like us who forced McCain to pick someone like Palin.

I'll be damned if I'm just going to sit around and watch him f*ck this up.

Someone ping that asshole McCain and tell him to pull the ad!

Forget it. The next time one of his telemarketers calls asking for money I'll tell him or her myself.

We know that whichever guy wins, they will sign an immigration bill that comes to their desk.

Of course, Bush would ALSO have signed a bill. So nothing’s changed.

EXCEPT that, if Obama wins, he gets replaced in the Senate with another pro-immigrant liberal democrat.

If McCain wins, we might well replace him with an anti-immigrant conservative.

And if not, if McCain wins, at least he won’t be in the Senate to put together coalitions. And he might have coattails to keep more republicans who oppose immigration in the house and senate.

So yes, we’d be better off if our ticket was Thompson/Palin, or Romney/Palin. But I don’t think anybody here was under the misconception that somehow McCain had changed his position.

However, you want to cause trouble? then ask them what Palin’s position is on immigration. Because so far as I can tell, she’s never really talked about it. So I don’t have any idea what her views are. I bet Alaska doesn’t have a lot of trouble with day laborers standing around the 7-11s.

Read the thread about Barone's piece on McCain getting inside Obama's OODA loop.

Read it thanks, it is very applicable. Mac's campaign is acting preemptively, taking the initiative to define the debate on issues that could be divisive for the GOP. Once again, Obama will be hard-pressed not to triangulate himself.

McCain will be in the catbirds seat as far as building coalitions in Congress (not just the Senate). Think back to the last Senator who went to the White House. LBJ knew where the bodies were buried and pushed a lot of legislation through.

We should at least make McCain sweat a little bit.

I would be happy for Hillary’s vote if it keeps Obama out of the WH. Who cares what he thinks about immigration now, it would be a losing battle for him once elected. His own party would fight him because they will face voters who don’t want the easy immigration. Would you rather have Obama? No doubt Obama’s creeps read enough sites including this one so they know how to divide the base and conquer. They are vile, stupid lowlifes but not ignorant of how to hurt McCain.

Are you actually thinking that the McCain campaign put this out and expected we wouldn't hear about it?

The stepford voters won’t bat an eye.

True, never mind just pass the cool-aide. Would you like a little grape with that. Seems many here just waddle like a duck!

What has he been doing his whole career?
Would you rather have Obama?
You don't have to sell out so quickly just because you don't want Obama. This is really over the top. Let McCain sweat a little bit. It's the only time there will be any leverage with him.

McCain will be a different kind of president. We will spend a lot of time opposing him on policies right from the start. Immigration reform will be a win for him because he can pass it with the Democrats and them claim he really is a bi-partisan reformer. We need to prepare for these battles now.

Every day I say to myself: Supreme Court nominees, Supreme Court nominees, Supreme Court nominees. Other than that I can think of no reason to vote.

Yes. Or just discount it as pandering. But who is he pandering to on this issue?

This one is over the top. He should sweat a little bit.

Yep. We killed amnesty once, we’ll do it again. Whoever wins this fall, the President will be someone who voted for the amnesty bill, so we can get the competent one who agrees with us on most issues or the cryptocommie neophyte who disagrees with us on everything more controversial than what color the sky is.
