It looks like the big story is going to be all of the foolish people that elected to stay behind, ignoring the mandatory evacuation orders, and ignoring the ‘certain death’ warnings from the NWS.
Now, a huge rescue operation will no doubt have to be mounted, weather permitting, to bring these folks to safety. Perhaps, charging them for their rescue costs, such as what stranded mountain climbers face from time to time, would drive the point home.
I hope that I am very wrong. But I believe the death toll is going to staggering for Galveston Island. I have heard from 9,000 and up to as many as 23,000 stayed on Galveston Island.
95% of Galveston is under water. The highest point on the island is where the media is.
I really think we are going to be in for a shock when the death tolls start coming in. I hope I am very very wrong but I fear that I am not.
I'd love to see it, but with our current nanny-state mentality (especially after Katrina), FEMA-guilt, and white-guilt in general, that would go over like a fart in church, especially at the federal level. First politician to suggest it would be hoisted on his own sword.
