Glad your problems aren’t major ...

They aren' even minor. They just aren't. :)

Well, except we could have used a few inches of rain, like maybe 5 or 6. More if we could spread it out over a few days. We are really dry.

Oh my Lord .. it sure could’ve been
much much worse. Praise God for all
His mercies. Did you consider leaving?

This just sucks... (this is story behind the lady that was hit by the tree in St. Louis County)

Prayers for this family!

Meanwhile, in Ladue, authorities said the storm was to blame for another fatality.

“It was a freak accident. Just a tree in the yard came down,” said Ladue Fire Chief Ted Jury.

Crews were hard at work Sunday afternoon, trying to remove the evidence of what happened here. According to family members, 49-year-old Joan Dankner took her dog into the backyard and never returned. Her husband went looking for her.

“He found her on the driveway, having been struck, he later learned by a very heavy limb to the back of the head,” said Lecie Lowenbaum, Dankner’s sister-in-law.

She was rushed to the hospital but it was too late. Dankner was mother to 11-year-old twin girls and a 10-year-old boy. She also spent many years working as an intensive care nurse. Her family said she will be sorely missed.

Wow- that’s unreal :( Listened earlier to TWC and they were tracing Ike- the winds and rain all across its path have been incredible up through the midwest.

Fell asleep waiting for FR to come back up!

Tell McCain that the supplies are getting through despite what the media says. God Bless McCain/Palin!

Too bad the Gov didn’t say “Look, MoFo... we have to get first responders at the staging areas, deploy them all over the Coast, try to get through the debris or clear the debris and then get through, make sure the pre-arranged distribution location is secure THEN alert the media. How stupid are you people, really?”

Talking to my Hispanic neighbors I found out that they are not at all impressed with the O.

One thing I didn’t mention, in our subdivision most people have piles of debris at their curb already. Many of them started the clean up yesterday. The contrast is startling. Neighbors I talked to had little time or patience with Sheila and her whining.

No. It was bizzare. I prayed about it as it crossed Cuba. Cuba has been really hammered this year. I just felt I should pray for no or minimal loss of life. I stayed calm throught the turn from Matagorda to Galveston. Until no internet. I felt okay as long as I was on FR reading.

I’m sure I speak for others who were in the way of Ike’s inital greeting when I say thanks for the prayers of everyone here!

Prayers going out for you.

Yes, the Mississippi is rising fast down by me.
It has went up 10.0 ft since about 7am on Sunday. (it is about 27.0 ft right now) - Normal stage is 17.0 ft / 27.0 ft is flood stage here, so we have reached action stage now.

We are expecting a rise up to 42.3 ft by Thursday afternoon (15.3 ft above flood stage) - but our community can easily handle a river stage of 42.3 ft here without much damage or concern.

In 1993 we hit 49.6 ft which as you know was the Great Flood of 93.

“A customer can be an entire apartment complex.”

Good point. My seriously ill wife is in one of those apartment complexes. No phone contact in over 24 hours, NO national media TV coverage of any significance. Something tells me coverage would be non-stop if it were New Orleans (or Manhattan).

Just peepin’ in before I go to sleep. The awful rainstorms have finally abated and there haven’t been any tornado watches or warnings tonight.

The NWS flood watches and warnings are continuing to arrive via my e-mail subscription to AccuWeather.com, so I hope the other shoe doesn’t drop tomorrow like it did after Gustav. One of the bulletins was quite ominous and mentioned that most flood deaths occur in automobiles — “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” This reminded me of previous posts earlier in the storm about warnings of “certain death” for those who didn’t evacuate — I wonder, is this a new trend with NWS warnings or is it just the seriousness of this particular storm?

A special shout-out to those who aren’t allowed to go home yet — being kept in suspense is truly awful. I lived in an apartment complex that was located alongside the Hackensack River in New Jersey in the early 1990’s. There was a very dangerous storm that made the river rise to unprecedented levels, and suddenly the police started pounding on the doors of every apartment in my building. They demanded that I evacuate immediately and they wouldn’t leave until they were sure I was out of there. I had been contemplating leaving, but I had an elderly cat and power was out at the local hotels. I didn’t know where else to go because I couldn’t take my cat to the Red Cross shelter set up at a nearby school. Meanwhile, the police weren’t taking no for an answer, so I jumped in my car with my cat carrier and no clue as to where we were headed. I finally accepted the invitation of a former neighbor who had moved to a house on top of a steep hill in Norwalk, Connecticut — it scared the daylights out of me driving across the George Washington Bridge in such high winds. Once I left, I couldn’t get any straight answers from the local authorities about whether or not it was OK to come home and I ended up staying in Norwalk for several days. Apparently I could have returned sooner, because my employer was located just the other side of the New Jersey Turnpike and the boss was furious with me for staying away as long as I did. I simply couldn’t get anyone to tell me what was going on at my home.

Unfortunately, it’s stuff like that which makes people think twice about evacuating the next time disaster strikes. So, here’s a special prayer for those people sitting in parking lots and rest stops, charging your cell phones with your car batteries — I hope you will be able to return to your property soon and assess the damage for yourselves.

How’s it up your way FGS?

Muddling through bert; thanks for asking.

In our area Ike didn't do quite as much damage as Rita three years ago -- but bad enough. We lost power well before Ike came ashore, and you may recall we're about 100 miles inland.

Operating on a generator for now, and probably for as long as I can afford to keep gas in it. At 8 - 10 gallons a day, every day, it don't take long to add up. Add to that for the time being having to drive 80 miles round trip to the nearest gas in Lufkin Tx. Several family members here including 3 grandbabies, so it's not just a convenience having the power available from a generator, it's very nearly a necessity. Turned just about everything off in the house a little while ago so my daughter could do a big load of wash. The washing machine isn't so bad, the dryer, on the other hand, draws some serious current.

From most accounts we will probably be without elec for several weeks. Up here in these piney woods we're sortof at the end of the line when it comes to restoring utility services. Just one of the joys of living in the country ;^)

For what it is worth, I’m guessing that they are going to find this to be worse than Alicia.

Oh, good freakin' grief; it's all relative. It doesn't really matter. Have you gone through either of these storms you insist upon comparing?

I was in a hurricane at sea when we were crossing the Atlantic to go live in Italy when I was a kid. The ship was tossed around real good for about three days. Will that work for you?

Thanks for checking in. Glad to know the rain is subsiding.

You have reminded me of another common, under-reported and unfortunate side effect in the aftermath of these storms--loose carpentry nails are everywhere. They get blown into roads and yards. This results in lot of flat tires, and a moderate number of puncture wounds through shoes and bare feet.

The "Turn around don't drown" slogan has been around for a few years. Take care.
