While the KJV uses the word “espoused” with regard to Mary, the majority of modern translations do not support your view.

Moot point, though. The second sentence makes it all worthwhile.

Betrothed, but not married. Had they been married, Mary's pregnancy would hardly have been regarded as miraculous.
