Sarah Palin runs Marathon with a blazing time of 3:59:36

So intent is the MSM in finding negative stories on Sarah Palin, that they just happen to overlook her amazing accomplishments.

Sarah Palin not only finished Anchorage's 2005 Humpy’s Marathon , but with a blazing time of 3:59:36, fourth in her age group, and only 9 1/2 minutes off the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon .

The only news source that has noted Palin's athletic bent is the WSJ Weekend Edition , which makes no mention of her marathon feat.

[sarah palin]

This has relevance to the MSM harping that Palin was picked for her looks. Palin still looks great at age 44 because she is in fantastic shape; being in shape didn't happen by accident, but due to Palin's healthy lifestyle (with avoidance of tobacco ), and exemplary determination and discipline.

Here is a photograph of Palin in the Governor's office. One immediately notices that Palin is attractive. The reason she is attractive as she is at age 44, is that she is a super fit marathon runner. If Palin is still especially good looking, it is in no small part because she has earned it.

Sarah Palin's running prowess has been noticed at the Runner's World blog , which serves to demonstrate it would be noticed by the MSM as part of the human interest and background on Palin, if they were not so bent on finding things negative in a bid to destroy her.

Running For Office

Susan Rinkunas

Election There's a lot of news swirling around Republican vice presidential nominee and Alaska governor Sarah Palin. We're not here to talk about that (fear not, political trash talkers, our forumites are all over it). Nor will we discuss the fact that tonight in Minneapolis, she'll make history by becoming the first-ever female Republican veep nominee when she formally accepts the nomination of her party.

Rather, we're here to inform you that, according to a forthcoming profile in The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Palin is a runner. Not just a "oh, I go jogging once in a while" kind of runner, but a "I'll get my run in or else" kind of runner. The woman named her first born "Track" for Pete's sake, because he was born during track season. (I should suggest that a friend due in November name her baby-boy-to-be "Pigskin"). True, Runner's World's sales development director named her dog "Miles," but...it's a dog.

Palin's routine is to run 7 to 10 miles almost every day but she has been known to take time off, not during an election year, but during a pregnancy year (she's a mother of five). She returned to work three days after giving birth to her fifth child, Trig, in April (is her husband a math teacher?) and is now back to running three miles every other day.

Alaska sure sounds like an interesting place to train. The governor lives in Wasilla, about 45 miles north of Anchorage, which is known to record days with 19 hours of sunshine in June. This is good news for a busy working mom who's trying to squeeze in her workouts amid parenting and, you know, running the largest state in the country. Accordingly, Palin has run outside at midnight, sans headlamp, because she can. Personally, I'd trade the long summer days in favor of having temps above zero in the winter.

Frostbite-inducing weather notwithstanding, Alaska does have a rustic charm. Case in point: Palin runs past glaciers and fuels up on moose and caribou. And her strength training? Snowmobiling. "It's the best upper body workout you could ever have," she tells the WSJ. "You're maneuvering through hundreds of pounds of powder."

All of these things seem to be working since Palin has clocked a 10K in 49:01 and ran Humpy's Marathon in Anchorage in a very respectable 3:59:36. These races were both before she assumed the post of governor, but we certainly give her credit.

We're not saying you should vote for someone just because they run (although this could be our chance to lobby successfully for wood chip running lanes between sidewalks and roads). So in the interest of fairness, we would now like to invite Democratic veep nominee Joe Biden to give birth to eight children, name one "Fartlek," and run an ultra. Then we'll write about him.

For the record, Barack Obama is a runner and his father may be Kenyan, but the Illinois senator is a former [?] smoker and hasn't run any races that we can find. He did, however, attend a University of Oregon "twilight" track meet in May and tested his hurdling ability (it wasn't pretty). But he chose Biden over Alan Webb as his running mate. For shame.

To our knowledge, neither Biden nor John McCain are runners. Anyone here know otherwise? Or do you know more about Obama's running habits?

Do we really want a vice-president who is always ducking out of meetings to go train?

We had one (Algore) who was always ducking out of meetings to go pee.

Or so he said.

Daughter, sister, wife, mother, mayor, Governor, Vice Presidential Nominee.

And don't forget soon-to-be mother-in-law and grandmother. I absolutely love the way she turned the tables on the media by having Bristol's baby daddy on stage with the family. Sarah had her brood there, ranging in age from 20 years to -4 months. In one stroke, she not only turned the Big Scandal into an asset, but more importantly, she transformed the Party of decrepitude and white haired dudes into the Party of youth, vigor and cuteness.

Humpys is a local watering hole here in Los Anchorage.

In 2008, there was still a Humpy's Marathon, but the name of the event has been changed to the Big Wild Life Runs .

Why is Anchorage, Los Anchorage? Expatriate Angelenos?

Nah - the “real” Alaskans who live in the bush - with bad or no roads, no sewer service, no real in house water service, no medical, etc, etc refer to it as Los Anchorage.

Me? I like running water and all that. I’m willing to put up with it, because having lived in the bush, I prefer this version of ‘city life’.

Beats the hell of out a lot of Eaast Coast cesspits like Killadelphia, and so.

To each their own

She did that indeed without even trying. They say those with the least to say have the biggest mouths and the media have just proven that statement to be true. Walk softly and carry a big stick...that’s Sarah Palin.

Obama basketball challenge to Palin ping. Palin should challenge Obama to a 5K. Palin would have a smoking time, and the smoker wouldn’t.

Grudging MSM acknowledgement:

Palin's marathon prowess

By Tom Held
Saturday, Sep 6 2008, 04:55 PM

Chris Ponteri, from the InStep Running & Walking Centers, tipped me off to the running aspect of Sarah Palin's athletic endeavors, which was glossed over a bit in all the talk of moose, hockey moms and lipstick this past week.

Palin, better-known for her ascendancy to become the Republican candidate for vice president, knocked out a 3:59:36 in the Humpy's Classic Marathon in Anchorage back in August 2005, about a year before she became the first female governor in Alaska history. That time was good for 63rd overall, and 15th among the women.

Humpy's may be a glorious run around Anchorage, but it doesn't exactly draw an elite field. The winning time in 2005 was a 3:01:45, and I didn't see anything in the race write-up about a caribou or moose-killing requirement that would slow the pace.

Palin's 3:59 and change, though, is certainly a quality effort, nearly an hour better than the median marathon time for women that year, which was 4:51:19.

The Wall Street Journal has a decent piece on the vice presidential candidate's running habits, and this posting from the Free Republic chastises the dreaded mainstream media for failing to report on her accomplishments. The interesting part of that is the comments, which includes a listing of a few other political marathons: President George W. Bush - 3:44:52 in the 1993 Houston Marathon and Vice President Al Gore - 4:58:25 in the Marine Corps Marathon in 4:58:25.

Of course, the press had a great time with pictures of President Clinton in running shorts during his days in Washington D.C. That's something that would have been best overlooked.

While I can’t say I’ve busted my butt as much as really tried to get into shape, I think while my muscles might be capable of doing something like this, the sheer pain of running 25 miles is not something that my body would allow me to do. Hell, I’ve thought about running a 5K and even that makes me shudder.

I don’t even have worn-down joints or anything and I still don’t understand being able to run that far without significant damage!

Hey! You forgot John Kerry ran the Boston Marathon - I kid you not. Except...he can't recall the year or his time. His claim - not mine! Along with shooting a 12 point buck.
