Detroit mayor will not plead guilty in text scandal
(CNN) -- Embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will not plead guilty Wednesday in connection with his text message scandal, a representative for a Michigan prosecutor said, despite an earlier statement that said he would.
Earlier Wednesday afternoon a statement on behalf of prosecutor Kym L. Worthy stated that "a plea may be imminent in the Kilpatrick text scandal case. It is expected that defendant Kwame Kilpatrick will plea guilty today at 5:15 p.m."
Within an hour of the statement, Worthy's office backtracked, saying there would not be a plea deal.
The Detroit Free Press reported on its Web site Wednesday that Kilpatrick would plead guilty in court Thursday morning.
A spokeswoman for Worthy would not confirm that report and would say only that plea negotiations were ongoing and that Kilpatrick is expected in court Thursday morning.
