They suddently were caught in a difficult situation: in three days, they have to introduce Palin to the world and stay on message--it means, deal with the Gustav's impacts (socially, politically, and also on the convention), and to handle attacks on Palin. This is on top of the scheduled campaigns (in MO, PA, OH). But I think they will come around.
Gustav. I know everybody else is blaming Palin or the Palin attacks, but I think a lot of republicans underestimate how badly Katrina destroyed the Republican party.
As stupid as it is, for most people the ONE thing they want from Government is to make them feel like the things that are out of their control are handled.
Katrina, for many, was a sign that the Republicans couldn’t make government work right when it was most needed.
We lost that argument when Bush accepted blame and gave a terrible speech in Lousiana. Nobody could defend him after he gave up.
And the last 3 days the media was non-stop reminding the nation about Katrina.
Hopefully people will be cheered by how things turned out and we will get back on track.
