A woman — but why this woman? [Sarah Palin]
The Baltimore Sun ^ | 1 Sep 2008 | Susan Reimer

Posted on 09/01/2008 8:37:27 AM PDT by maica

So. This is what being pandered to feels like.

John McCain picked Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska and mother of five, to be his running mate to woo women like me.

He seems to think that my girlfriends and I are so disappointed that an utterly qualified woman is not going to be president that we will jump at the chance to vote for an utterly unqualified woman for vice president.

You gotta love a guy who thinks things are that simple.

Women already outvote men in this country, and it isn't because we like voting for all those women on the ballot.

Does McCain think we will be so grateful for a skirt on the ticket that we won't notice that she's anti-abortion, a member of the NRA and thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution?

Vocabulary point: her objection is not to Palin's qualifications but to Palin's positions on the issues. I wish liberals knew that words have meaning. Her real complaint is that abortion is not in the Bill of Rights and protecting that Supreme Court decree overshadows all other considerations. Palin is qualified, with experience comparable to many haghly ranked presidents. Four presidents generally ranked in the top fifteen by historians have had experience comparable to Governor Palin’s prior to assuming office: Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Grover Cleveland.

Sarah Palin spent four years as a City Council Member for Wasilla, Alaska, six years as Mayor of Wasilla, and two years as Governor of Alaska.

FDR spent just over two years in the New York State Senate, eight years as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and four years as Governor of New York.

Theodore Roosevelt spent some time in the New York State Assembly(?), two years as Governor of New York, two years as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and less than one year as Vice President of the United States.

Woodrow Wilson spent eight years as President of Princeton University and two years as Governor of New Jersey.

Grover Cleveland spent two years as Sheriff of Erie County, two years as Mayor of Buffalo, and two years as Governor of New York.

Overall, I’d say that Palin’s background is comparable with that of several presidents considered highly successful, even considering that her state has a smaller population than the other two states on the list.

While Obama has been running for office for as long as Palin has been running a state, I find it hard to consider the two tasks as comparable preparation.

One final note: I will be posting this multiple times because I think it is important to get the word out that that her experience is in keeping with previous presidents. I apologize to those who are annoyed by seeing it too often.

The wife of my wife's brother is from a Yellow Dog Democrat family, and she is a committed Leftist. She has been planning to vote for Obama. All of her friends are cool, with-it Leftists in their late 30s and early 40s.

Today she asked me what I think of Sarah Palin. I said I think she's terrific. She agreed.

She said that she read about Sarah Palin about a month ago and was very impressed.

Sarah guarantees her vote for McCain. She says that's final.

When I told her that Sarah's husband and children are part Eskimo, the exclaimed that that's even better.

I think many on the Left have been looking for an excuse not to vote for Obama. She's probably one.

She told me some time ago that her father (whom I do not know) will not vote for Obama because her father is a racist but that he is a committed Democrat and will not vote for a Republican either; so he probably will not vote at all.

My brother-in-law has been very much influenced by his wife's political opinions and has been a Democrat, but when Obama emerged as the Democrat nominee he told me that Obama scares the @$%&!! out of him and that he will definitely vote Republican--a complete about face for him.

Perhaps. But more women will vote for her because she is everything a woman should be - strong, competent, engaged, and a force to be reckoned with. If Democrats don’t know that now, they’ll soon learn.

She needs to get laid or something else real and that is not in her head. She is an idiot that thinks tangentially.

These people are laughable.

They are so puffed up with their own self importance they never consider a decision might be taken without any concern at all as to what they might think or how they might be affected.

Go ahead - be indignant - write nasty columns that your own small circle agree with.

Just don’t let your overgrown ego explode your brain housing.

No too jealous, is she? I just read her bio and some titles of other articles she’s written. Sounds like one of those angry “Ms.” types. Not only did she used to do sports writing, she majored in journalism, like Sarah Palin. However, unlike Sarah Palin, she does not have anwhere close to Sarah’s working resume, attitude (or waistline)Hah!!

He didn’t do it for the sake of women, but for the sake of conservatives.

******

Of course! She took on her own party in Alaska and won. How could McCain not be impressed by that! They will be a good team.

No, it was more aimed at those like me that really didn't like him and would have never voted for him, especially if he chose a conventional VP candidate.

Palin has SOLID credentials...including character.

Susan Reimer is probably a hate filled ugly lesbian, who spends most of her time writing fairy tales about lesbians and their children and how healthy gay unions are:

The democrats, like a poor marksman, just keep missing the target.

They brag about their support of diversity, and rights for the disabled, but of course that does not include children with genetic defects.
