The Guardian ^ | 8/27/2008 | Ian Traynor

US and Russian warships took up positions in the Black Sea today in a risky war of nerves on opposing sides of the Georgia conflict.

With the Russians effectively controlling Georgia's main naval base of Poti, Moscow also dispatched the Moskva missile cruiser and two smaller craft on "peacekeeping" duties at the port of Sukhumi on the coast of Abkhazia, the breakaway region that the Kremlin recognised as independent yesterday.

Nothing a bit of “in flight refueling” wouldn’t cure, and don’t think the Russians are the only ones with subs in the Black Sea at this point.

The Moskva is definitely a badass,

It's a barely sailable rustbucket which was damaged by the Georgian Navy.

I'll agree with you on the subs, but I don't know if the Russians have any in the Black Sea.

Do you have any "sourceable" information on the condition of the Moskva? I'm not doubting you, it's just that I can't find a thing.

I'm not doubting you, it's just that I can't find a thing.

I read on another thread that it had been damaged in the battle and was returning to Sevastapol for repairs, but then was ordered to turn around when the US Navy was enroute to Georgia.

I sure wouldn't want to be a Russian sailor on that thing right now.

If this ship is the “Moskva” she used to be called the “Slava”. I used to track this beast in the Med back in the mid 80’s. She's been around while.

The design is said to be marred by large quantities of flammable material and poor damage-control capabilities.

Moskva (ex-Slava)
The Moskva (ex-Slava), which had been in refit at the Nikolayev yard since December 1990, remained undelivered to the Russian Black Sea Fleet through the end of the millenium. No projected date for completion of this much-delayed work was known. The Moskva was finally returned to service in April 2000, replacing the Admiral Golokov as the flagship of the Black Sea fleet. The “Moskva” was finally re-commissioned with hull number “121” after its overhaul in 2000.
