There was a guy in my office in St. Paul who added an apostrophe to nearly every word that had an “s” ending...

Its really a shame, that those folks couldn't appreciate the sign in it's natural state.

let's see what the GP can do with that!

I’ll have to admit that I’ve erased apostrophes used improperly for plurals off of restaurant chalkboards a couple of times, but yeah...this is going a little too far. ;-)

This stuff used to bug me too but the internet has desensitized me to grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. I no longer feel compelled to post corrections to my errors or other’s. (or is it others’?)

Here is a link that shows the actual sign:

http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=522

I think it is telling that no one noticed for a month or more.

These idiots would never have been caught if they had not posted a web site about their crime and boasted about it.

Most criminals are caught because they cannot keep their mouth shut.

Armed with Sharpies, erasers and righteous indignation, two apostles of the apostrophe make it their crusade to rid the world of bad signs

"Deck and Herson, both 28, toured the United States this spring, wiping out errors on government and private signs. They were interviewed by National Public Radio and the Chicago Tribune, which called them 'a pair of Kerouacs armed with Sharpies and erasers and righteous indignation.' "

I remember my high school English grammar teacher, Sister Alice, telling me the basic rule of a comma; “If you think one should go there in all liklihood it doesn’t!”

*** I detest those extraneous apostrophes'.***

Me too!!

And those, who will remain unnamed, who insert commas willynilly, just to break up a run on sentence, or some likewise screed, that should end in a period, and then begin a new sentence with a capital letter. Because everyone knows you do that with hyphens!

And I also hate those who end every sentence with an exclamation point! ... or two!!

In addition, 'alot' is not, I repeat NOT a word. So your spell checker isn't broke, trust it. 'a lot' is TWO separate words. Unless of course you mean 'allot', but that has a completely different meaning and would rarely be used in a post.

This wasn’t an extraneous apostrophe on that sign, just a poorly place one. It said
“womens’”
As if something was possessed by a group of “womens.”

It's an old sign, that makes it "rare" and "historic"? Kind of like the areas of town that are declared "historic districts" just because they have a bunch of crappy old row houses there. Who gives a rat's behind.
