Sam Nunn or Evan Bayh also would have been solid picks for filling the role you described.

Bill Richardson would have locked up New Mexico, Nevada, and maybe Colorado for Obama.

Tim Kaine might have locked up Virginia for him.

A credible female candidate (maybe Feinstein) would have generated even more buzz and excitement from the MSM and the Libs about the "groundbreaking" nature of the ticket, and probably would have increased his margin with women.
