The three NBC commentators for the gymnastic events were talking about it--I'm pretty sure it was the night of the beam finals. They were saying, with absolute certainty, that removal of medals for lying about the gymnast's age is simply not an option. In fact, they were basically saying that, as things stand now, there is literally
no punishment, no sanction for doing it. It
kind of makes sense. How can it be definitively proven that these girls even
know how old they are? Many of them have been training since they were three or four years old. It's impossible to tell who is responsible for perpetrating the lie.
Gymnastics is a mess. I love it, I was a gymnast growing up, but the sport is a stinking mess.
