TBILISI, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Georgia's Interior Ministry said on Saturday that Russian troops had blown up a railway bridge about 45 km (30 miles) from the Georgian capital Tbilisi.
Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said troops had destroyed the bridge in the Kaspi region west of Tbilisi, "paralysing the Georgian railway network". Reuters could not independently verify the report.
A Reuters correspondent saw Russian armoured personnel carriers and soldiers advance to the area on Friday from the Russian-occupied town of Gori near breakaway South Ossetia.

The Soviets came from the East.
The goal is to deter further aggression and reduce the chance of WWIII. If Russia secures the oil pipelines through Georgia, they will be able to dominate most of Europe and be emboldened to further aggression. If the West is not willing to take some risk, then they should submit to the new Soviet reemergence.
France and Germany already rejected Georgian entry into NATO and are less likely to support their entry after their reckless attack on South Ossetia.
go do some research. You have no clue as to what started this. you got your info from the Kremlins initial talking points that ALL western journalists accepted AS IS.
go do research, then come back.
Suggestion. Ralph Peters article in the aug 9th Washington Post. Google it.
And, had we just let Russia take over Afghanistan, we wouldn’t have OBL and 911 would have never happened.:>)
Weary of the Russian presence on their soil, the Georgians took the bait. President Mikheil Saakashvili ordered his US-trained military to respond.
OCSE peace talks were to have taken place the next day in Tskhinvali. I Guess Saakashvili didn't want to talk peace.
Instead he launched an all-out-assault on a civilian area (Tskhinvali) with GRAD (MLRS) rockets.
Try to get real information. This was kremlin talking points GIVEN to the western journalists who just printed it without validation.
You just don’t WANT to know the truth or you would research it.
I dont think its going to look like that much longer. Russian bastards
Cool again. I don't remember the US, acting favorably to the soviet missiles in Cuba, oh, and the Grenada island comes to mind too. What makes russians any different?
Russia secures the oil pipelines through Georgia, they will be able to dominate most of Europe and be emboldened to further aggression.
For the EU, Russia is today the single most important external supplier of natural gas and oil, as it is.
The FNC said it quite plainly that Georgia embarked on this adventure against the advice of the Sate not to do so. Must be some "right-wing propaganda".
time and again, if you look at history you'll see that all armies have to have certain things in order to succeed. Logistics determines the movement of the army. The "lay" of the land will show you how troops can be moved.
Country will be cut in half and Tbilisi will be essentially put in a siege. Surround the city, weaken the leader have the people of Georgia replace the president with a puppet. Kinda what we should do in Venezuela, Cuba and any other 3rd world communist/socialist toilet in Latin America.
fox news has been busy with a missing/dead child reports and John Edwards..I have been forced to watch CNN which ironically has better coverage on this than Fox.
Try to get real information. This was kremlin talking points GIVEN to the western journalists who just printed it without validation.
These are the peace talks I was referring to...
Georgia and separatists in breakaway South Ossetia agreed to talks scheduled for Friday after days of heavy fighting raised fears of new war in the volatile Caucasus.Georgian Daily ( August 07, 2008 )
And here...
MEGVREKISI, Georgia (Reuters) - Georgian forces and separatists in breakaway South Ossetia ceased fighting on Thursday and called talks after days of heavy clashes raised fears of new war in the volatile Caucasus.Reuters (Thu Aug 7, 2008 2:40pm EDT}In a dramatic address, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili offered the separatists an immediate ceasefire.
Moscow said the two sides had agreed to talk at the Russian peacekeeping base in the separatist capital Tskhinvali on Friday.
I thought it was the OSCE meeting referenced below, but I was wrong. It was a meeting set up directly by Georgia and South Ossetia, as the above Georgian source shows.
One reason I thought it was an OSCE meeting is because of this Georgian newspaper report...
OSCE Chair Calls for Direct Talks on S.Ossetia. (7 aug, '08)
I hope this clears things up.
Of course, if you are still in denial, you can can assume that the Georgian journalists just took Kremlin talking points without validation.
I wonder what would happen if the Georgian President invited U.S. military engineering crews in to rebuild the bridge. No aggression or fighting (except to defend themselves), just to rebuild the bridge.
Amanpour comes to mind ... .
I thank God every day she is not covering this!!!!!
that woman’s voice alone is enough to drive me insane!
Yup.
Yup.
Russians have seven possible ways to run the end game of their Russian Gambit. IMHO.
Level Tbilisi and Cold War II begins along with a possible WWIII.
Siege Tbilisi to install a pro-Russian leader and effectively control Georgia.
Siege Tbilisi and basically hold the Georgians hostage to prevent any attack on Iran by US/Israel. Attack Iran and Russians will level Tbilisi instantly.
Leave Georgia and abide by the Peace accord.
Leave Georgia and keep troops in the two autonomous regions to attack Georgia once again in the future and complete the conquest.
Leave Georgia and keep troops in the two autonomous regions to threaten Georgia if the US attacks Iran.
Continue doing what they currently are doing. Violating the peace accord while denying there are violating the peace accord.
