Today during one of the rounds of womens volleyball, a judge called the Americans for three fouls against the Chinese in the same set.

Replay showed they had not committed the fouls.

Why don’t they have electronic like fencing?

so it’s not just gymnastics I see.
How many other sports in the summer games require a panel of judges?

Momma said knock him out. That really is the only option when you know you are going to get a bad ref.

Way back in my hockey playing days, we got a referee for a playoff game that we knew was good friends with our opponents. It was a local league and we were willing to shrug off most calls but it was just getting ridiculuous. Since it was my last season I ran the ref in the 3rd period-hard. Absolutely freight trained him. Still grin about it with my friends to this day-ear to ear baby.

“Maybe there are some Freepers out there who are knowledgable about gymnastics and would beg to differ. I’d definitely like to hear from them”

I’ve spent the majority of my life involved in gymnastics and I do not beg to differ.

Over several different matches I saw multiple instances where Boxer A snapped back the head of Boxer B with a clean punch, and no point was registered. IMO the judges are either stupid or biased.

Yeah that was pretty bad. Not a very exciting routine and she had 4 or 5 balance checks and never really looked anything like the 2 Americans. Fortunately Lukin and Johnson both nailed their floor exercise and ended up where they should have but Johnson should have won the silver in a walk instead of only .05 or whaterver it was.

I remember the Tae Kwon Do Junior Olympics somewhere in the late 80’s. I saw a kid chasing another around the ring, driving him out of the ring, completely dominating him, but losing the match. One of the ring judges even went to argue with the judges at the table that it was a wrong decision. He told us later that the boy who was allowed to win and to proceed to the medal round was a student of one of the organizers. I saw this happen at least 3 times that day.

“Did you see the replay of Béla Károlyi’s reaction during the floor exercise? I have to say that the man is excited about gymnastics.”

I got such a good laugh out of that!
I remember when he was still coaching they used to mic him just for comedy relief.

I think he was extra excited because he knew the judges were looking to jip the american, and Nastia didn’t give them anything to work with.

Bob Costa’s reaction to Bela was funny too.

Underage gymnasts, corruption in the boxing events, judges at the women's gymnastics deliberately delaying the start for an American gymnast to break her concentration. China is really showing its true colors here.

So, who's surprised by this? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

The Cold War is still with us, and until the latest Russian / Georgian kerfluffle, I would have said that the Olympics were one of the last theaters of engagement.

What is tragic about this is that a lot of kids apparently believed that it was all over, and that these Games would be held on a level playing field. Just why they believed this is another question altogether, and one which ought to cause some soul-searching in a number of venues.

I’m surprised that you all don’t know that the olympic “games” are bogus. It’s a celebration of youth and power, but not of fairness or honesty. Been that way for a long time. It’s too bad, but them’s the facts. (btw I’ve worked on the inside of two olympics, 1984 & 1996)

Liuken may indeed have been better than Johnson, but Johnson’s score should have been a lot closer to Liuken’s than 0.6 points.

On the other hand, there is no way the Chinese gymnast’s score should have been within 0.075 points of Johnson’s when you compare the bar routines.

Now Johnson 0.075 behind Liuken and China 0.6 behind Johnson I would have believed.

There’s no practical way to do it. In fencing, they wear pads covering their whole body. In boxing the only pads are on the head, hands and a cup. And, you can’t just put a sensor in the gloves because many of the punches are blocked (ie, non-scoring blows). Also, iirc amateur scoring correctly, different blows count differently (e.g., a power shot to your opponent’s heads is worth more than a jab to the body.)

I have followed boxing [amateur & pro] for well over 50 years and I have never seen such incompetence and/or corruption in the officiating as I have seen, in these games.

If the fault lies with the method of scoring then the system should be scrapped!!

It is PATHETIC!

Nearly impossible in Olympic boxing to score a KO. These judges are stopping the action and giving standing-8 counts every time a solid right is landed to the head. They are stopping the action every few seconds. It’s nearly impossible to watch. Boxing is dying from self-inflicted wounds.
