Well isn't this a replay of Clinton/Albright/EU/NATO when they bombed Yugoslavia? The lie and pretext being "ethnic cleansing, genocide, etc." Even though Russia didn't need a lessen in propaganda, as Putin was trained and practiced with the best of the Soviet era propagandists, the irony would be amusing if it weren't so pathetic. The false claims of genocide and ethnic cleansing created the perfect pretext for Putin. He's playing according to the rules set down by the West. The only one-upmanship the West have on him though, is that the press bought the false stories of Milosevic and the former Yugoslavia, hook, line and sinker. So those stories will maintain the supposed integrity and righteousness of the bombing of a sovereign country now reduced to the Republic of Serbia minus the latest piece of it Kosovo.
Only problem for Putin of course, is that while Clinton and his cabal were able to hoodwink almost everybody, very few people believe anything Putin says. But he is trying to play by their rules though.
