Russian news reports are quoting President Dmitri Medvedev ordering a halt to Russian military action in Georgia.

Could be a Russian trick. Would hardly be new either.
Putin is most definitely working on a plan to overthrow Georgia’s democratic government once and for all..
This is only part of it.
They won’t secure Georgia, but simply the areas around the disputed regions. It will probably be an initial NATO or EUFOR but will probably end up under the U.N. The U.N. currently have a buffer zone/region in Abkhazia. All they will be doing is keeping the peace between Georgians and Russian forces. Think of it as like the Green line that is currently in Cyprus except on two fronts.
“How long will it be before all the armchair generals on freepers come out claiming that it was the U.S carrier battle groups or that President Bush threatened all out war with Russia? Most people didnt stop and think exactly what the Russian aims were exactly. All they could think of is the the Evil Empire is on the move again and that the sky is falling!”
You clearly do not understand the impact of this action beyond Georgia. If you wish to conclude that the “Evil Empire” is merely extending solidarity in two territories in another country and there are no repercussions for both Georgia, the region and the world, then you are naive.
Quite.
Clearly you do not understand Putin, the KGB or the 20th century examples of its elders’ brutality.
Your analysis suffers from a severe case of myopia.
CNN reporting that Russian planes are still bombing.
But you never took a step back to look at the bigger picture. The last thing that the Russians wanted was another occupying army in a land that doesn’t want them. Such a conflict is a sap on government and political lives. Annexing of the regions by use of the big military stick was the goal. The Russians have achieved their aims. They have achieved their territorial gains and bloodied the nose of Saakashvili. They don’t need to go any further.
Can anyone explain to me in simple language how this thing got started? What really happened in South Ossetia? What are the “war crimes” of the Georgian president?
Yup.
I found it disgusting for Putin to be talking about War Crimes being committed by the Georgians. If anyone should be on trial for War Crimes it’s Putin.
Why? To the Russians it is the final solution to the problem. No longer will Georgia or Georgian sepratists be able to sit from inside Georgia and shell South Ossetia. The regions will be totally under Russian control with absolutely no threat to them in the future. The Georgians have completely lost those territories for good. You don’t seem to quite understand that.
For the Russians the threat of any armed attack by shelling or forces in proximity to the regions is gone. If the Georgians are stupid enough to threaten or support action against the regions then the Russians will just repeat as necessary against those forces. The Russians are hoping that the big stick used has finally sent a message to the Georgians that they have lost for good those territories. A simple message of stay away and don’t meddle! No need to occupy a whole nation.
The Russians have halted military action for now, but I don’t know how long that will last. Already there are reports of “separatist forces” beginning offensives against Georgia. Also left unaddressed was the question of whether Russian forces will leave Georgia territory.
This is not just payback for Kosovo, in my opinion. The Russians have long had a desire to show these pesky Eastern European democracies with Western leanings that they are still in charge. This was a carefully crafted plan to re-assert Russian military might in the region. Georgia was only the first step, can Ukraine, Estonia, etc. be far behind?
“Son, the Russians don’t take a dump without a plan...”
Looking at the entire Caucasus with respect to its geopolitical ramifications, is the biggest picture possible.
The last thing that the Russians wanted was another occupying army in a land that doesnt want them.
I have to bail on this discussion, but please it is clear that you cannot possibly know what the Russians wanted.
They dont need to go any further.
So this was all about need ?
And your analysis does likewise. It is a simple Russian solution to a problem. A big stick as a lesson to the Georgians. The Russians can simply retire to their annexed regions with the threat of repeating as necessary if the Georgians meddle or attempt to establish forces near the regions.
Your conclusions on the finality of the Russian invasion of Georgia are entirely devoid of any broader implications other than a stated belief of agreement with the Russian propaganda of the day.
Which I might add, changes daily.
Will you do so in lockstep with it? We’d just like to know.
And no longer will Russian PeaceKeepers be able to fire shells into Georgia or shoot at Georgian border guards.
The regions will be totally under Russian control with absolutely no threat to them in the future.
They already had control of South Ossetia. They even issued Russian passports to all its citizens.
The Georgians have completely lost those territories for good. You dont seem to quite understand that.
How do you know that ? My guess is they dont want have anything to do with them anymore.
For the Russians the threat of any armed attack by shelling or forces in proximity to the regions is gone. If the Georgians are stupid enough to threaten or support action against the regions then the Russians will just repeat as necessary against those forces.
Russia will have to travel through International peacekeepers to get to the Georgians. This may be what the Georgian President was after all along. Remember when he stated, 'it may seem ridiculous as to why we continue to fight for Georgia under such conditions'.
“This is not just payback for Kosovo, in my opinion. The Russians have long had a desire to show these pesky Eastern European democracies with Western leanings that they are still in charge. This was a carefully crafted plan to re-assert Russian military might in the region. Georgia was only the first step, can Ukraine, Estonia, etc. be far behind?”
You sir are a wiser man than some on this thread. :) Thank you.
BBC : Reports of continued bombing in parts of Georgia.
Russia Today reports that the pro-Soviet Republic of Abkazia is still conducting combat operations against Georgian forces.
Sky News also reporting Russian bombers hitting villages around Gori
Yes a need to bloody the nose of Saakashvili and to finally secure and annex the territory that they wanted. Georgia isn’t going to get the territory back. Even Putin and Medvedev wouldn’t be stupid enough to drag Russia into a total occupation of Georgia.
