Russian news reports are quoting President Dmitri Medvedev ordering a halt to Russian military action in Georgia.

Hiding??? He gave a speech today to a huge, cheering crowd, outside in Tblisi.
That country "filled with a bunch whiners and weenies" is currently shedding blood and treasure on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan to secure this nation and the freedom of millions of our fellow human beings. How a citizen of America can be so dismissive and pessimistic in describing his own country given the events of the last 7 years is beyond me.

Yes...Russia did declare a cessation of all hostilities, while they continued their brutal campaign to destroy a valliant ally of the USA. They continued bombings all day!
NATO is a chimera. The question isn’t, will Georgia and Ukraine be in NATO in three years, but wither NATO itself in three years?
Night action did and do occur in any military engagement, especially when the enemy controls the air space, but civillians were never targeted except for the so called Assecia protection forces that were spraying bullets indescrimunately and have been singled out for starting this under the supervision of their Russian handlers.
You then attack the Georgian government as if it is responsible for all of this and should never has split with mother Russia in spite of the fact that the only reason they belonged to the USSR to begin with is that they have been forced to by repeated invasions, the last one occurring in 1921, for similar reasons I might add.
America generally supports infant democracy and tries to foster it where we can, and we fostered this one. Their elected leadership is truly American trained and inspired, and truly democratic yet far from mature and perfect.
I see a lot of talk regarding George Soros, who we generally loathe, yet you need to understand that what Soros does in Georgia and other Eastern European States, is to invest and foster democratic growth. This makes his investments pay off.
Unfortunately Soros then takes profits and puts them into the American political system against conservative investments. This in no way means that Georgia cannot benefit from his wealth. Young Democracy's grow in incremental steps, and they are moving from Communism, so the next step is more socialist and sporadic then we would like here, but we are mature and have the institutions needed where they do not and cannot be compared to our democracy or our Republic.
You therefore cannot use some small issue regarding how they achieve their legal and social stability with those in the U.S. They have unique problems making these transitions.

No, the UN is a chimera. Nato succefully fended off the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact for many many years. It lost some of its relevancy only because of its success - the thwarting of Soviet/Russian aggression.
Now it has new life - another loss and miscalculation of Putin’s Russia.
Excellent observation, and I concur completely. NATO's relevancy has just increased ten fold. We are back to the future of the Cold War and nothing will stop it now.
Absolutely. Putin rescued NATO from irrelevance.
England is an ally, so are Nato members, Georgia is not. They may be 'valiant' as demonstrated by their sacrifices during WWII. They are not valiant by their actions in routing out civilians from Osestia.
Their populace at some point will require again that resources being limited, that priorities other than military be predominant at some point.
Right now, they are basking in false glory that was given to them by Putin's aggressive actions, but reality is just around the corner and the big freeze will begin again causing markets and technical help to begin to dry up again.
It will be interesting to watch, and see how fast the changes occur as the world's mood sours and reality becomes obvious to their people.

Georgia, in the dead of night on the opening of the Olympics, sent its military into S. Ossetia. They shelled the major town, torched homes, and displaced 30k women, children, and old folk.
Georgia did this, in hopes that the refugees would be afraid to return, thus depopulating S. Ossetia of its Russian citizens.
Georgia attacked a helpless civilian population (ostensibily, their ‘own citizens’) and would have had a faiti compli by the time EU/UN/international community did anything...
It would have worked, except for one thing—
Russia intervened.

That’s a lie. Georgia sent the second largest cvontingent os soldiers to Iraq. That makes them an ally!

Maybe, Georgia ain’t getting in. Especially, not after this. When Georgia’s application was denied earlier this year for NATO entry, it was Germany who objected. The reason for its objection: the Caucusses were ‘too volatile,’ Georgia had too many unresolved territorial disputes (S. Ossetia, Abkhazia).
So...I don’t think getting your ass kicked in a war is going to create a line of wouldbe allies.
