What was the USSR after in Afganistan??? Dirt, Mountains??

Access to Iran and it's oil, plus a possible war water port. Afghanistan was just a step. Turned out to be a doozy.

Same thing that we're after now. Except they wanted to replace Mullah control with Communism, which may have been an improvement.
