Edwards affair puts US Democrats on defensive

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democrats moved Saturday to staunch the damage after one-time party star and presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted having an affair during his White House run as his wife battled cancer.

With the party's national convention to officially crown Senator Barack Obama as its White House candidate just over two weeks away, Democrats sought to minimize the scandal as a personal matter for the Edwards family.

"We have unrealistic expectations for people. John Edwards like the rest of us is only human," said Howard Wolfson, a former senior official for the rival presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton.

"The truth is a lot of ordinary, average Americans have affairs," Wolfson told Fox News.

Edwards, a North Carolina senator before he joined the presidential race in 2004, went public with his long-rumored affair on ABC television late Friday, conceding that it went on as he prepared his White House run and while his wife was being treated for breast cancer.

Edwards, 54, apologized profusely, admitting that life on the campaign trail had made him "increasingly egocentric and narcissistic."

He denied, however, fathering the six-month-old baby of 42-year-old filmmaker Rielle Hunter, although according to reports Saturday her family is seeking a paternity test from Edwards.

Edwards is married to Elizabeth Edwards, a popular figure due to her courageous fight against her cancer, which has been judged by doctors to be incurable since it returned in 2007.

She wrote on the Daily Kos website that her husband told her in 2006 of the affair, saying that it had been painful but that it was a private issue.

"We have unrealistic expectations for people."

Oh well, THAT makes it OK then. After all, it's unrealistic to expect a man not to cheat on his wife if she has cancer.

"We have unrealistic expectations for people. John Edwards like the rest of us is only human...The truth is a lot of ordinary, average Americans have affairs," Howard Wolfson told Fox News.

If it were former Senator John Edwards (R), Wolfson would be shaking his head and talking about Republican hypocrisy, about such shameful behavior coming from a Party that claims to represent 'family values', blah-blah-blah.

Wolfson is such a whore. LOL

Yes, they do. And when found out they become pariahs in their communities.

John Edwards running for President after telling his wife of his affair IS NOT A PRIVATE ISSUE, Elizabeth.

YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD HIM TO DISCONTINUE HIS RUN FOR THE WHITE HOUSE. You were just as egocentric as he, just as narcissistic.

Right now you should be demanding that Reille Hunter agree to a paternity test, as your husband has — SO THE TRUTH CAN COME OUT.

I don't expect you to do that, as YOU KNOW THE TRUTH.

According the the Enquirer editor, Edwards met with Hunter and the baby several times in recent months, before getting caught in July. WHAT ABOUT THAT?

Honesty, integrity, and fidelity are human characteristics that most Americans admire and strive to in their daily lives. When someone puts themselves forward as a leader and is lifted by the media to the status of national figure, we expect that they conduct themselves in a manner fitting to the trust we have put in them.

Yes, Edwards is human. But he is no longer a man worthy of consideration as a leader of this country. He betrayed a trust then covered it up and used his media celebrity to deflect the criticism due. He has yet to tell the whole story and the MSM continues to assist in deceiving the American people. He deserves to be shunned.

Edwards, Clinton, McCain - the violation of the marriage covenant knows no political boundaries. Sad.

I don’t really understand how this affects Democrats.

They don’t offer any moralistic behavior, so this is just par for the course for them. Of course, Edwards foibles will probably just be blamed on someone else. Because, you are never responsible for your own actions if you are a Democrat.

But he (Obama) and others said that Edwards, who was Senator John Kerry's running mate in their failed 2004 White House bid, was no longer likely to address the party convention in the wake of his admission.

If it's no big deal then the Democrat Party should let him speak at the convention.

Bill Clinton lied about extramarital sex, and he’s speaking at the convention.

I guess under Democrat diversity rules, one philanderer at the convention is enough.

Elizabeth Edwards wrote an explanation to the DailyKos? I guess the Edwards know who their audience is.
