I believe we can do a lot materially, logistically, and with intel. We can make it clear to the Russians that our intent is to provide such help and do all in our power to help the Georgians bloody the Bears nose and embarass them unless the stop their agression.

But we have to be very serious about it and be very quick in making it happen. Putin is gamblling that we either A) Won't, or B) Can't make it happen quickly enough.

My prayers are that Georgia can hold out and that we will get the help to them.

“4th, the Georgians in the immediate past, have been our steadfast allies in combat in the War on Terror. We cannot allow them to be trodden under.”

Absolutely agree!

Sakashvili is a hothead and he has started a war, probably without our approval.

Russia is also an ally in the war on terror and we need them more than we need Georgia.

I would practice Realpolitik, not romantic politics on this one.

“We need to return to a philosophy of using the military only for the direct defense of our national interests.”

We call that “Sitting around waiting for another 9/11”

I agree we screwed them or rather Clinton screwed them. However, the staunch ally thing, what did they ever do for us as far as being an allay? They were/are a staunch allay of Russia, not the U.S.

Yes, easily. Over 7,000 Americans were killed at Gettysburg in three days, and at Cold Harbor the union lost somewhere around 5,000 men in one assault at Cold Harbor.

Not our fight. To get involved with a tempest in a teapot would be the height of folly. As cynical as it sounds, let Georgia and Russia slug it out.

A great power knows that not every fight is in its best interests, and this is one of them.

Does not have to be that accurate when the difference is that large.

This has the potential to get out of hand real fast. Russia invaded Georgia(Our Ally). If we allow this to stand then what is our allegiance worth.

Does Georgia have nukes.

What HRH BHO saying.

Me thinks the same scorecard has "Georgia", "Russia", "Iran", "United States" written on it. Interesting timing during the Olympics. The Russians don't do things without a plan and neither do we.

No doubt Bush has given Putin the green light for this - in return for ???

No way. Would we else have trained with the Georgians just a day before and now voice our support for their integrity?

>>Georgia launched an offensive

Ah, a little factual clarity.

Plus Ossetia is culturally, ethnically Russian.

If Kosovo, why not Ossetia? Independence or Federation with Russia. Ditto Abkhazia.

It’s those pesky pipeline routes from Azerbaijan, for one.

We did not recognize the territorial integrity of Serbia, but we do of Georgia? It’s hypocricy.

Georgia is now turning off Russian TV, don’t want people to hear the other side.

In Georgia on Saturday disable all Russian TV broadcasts

INTERFAX.RU - Since Saturday, 9 August, all Russian television channels broadcast on Georgian territory will be turned off, told reporters Friday evening at the National Security Council Secretary Alexander Lomaya Georgia.

“In recent days, Russian media and especially TV channels are implementing this information war against Georgia, so we decided to turn off Saturday with all Russian television channels broadcast on Georgian territory”

Sorry, I would not call Russia a steadfast ally in the WOT in the least. Their material and weaponry support of both Saddam and now Iraq has led directly to the deaths of our soldiers.

Putin and his ilk are not our allies, they will go along with us only when it aligns with their plans (not very often) and oppose us when it does not (most of the time).

Georgia on the other hand has been unwaivering when they did not have to be, and when in fact, as it is now showing, when it was risky for them to be.

You do not return that type of support and friendship with a back hand or a tossing under the bus.

Besides, the broader implications of this Sudetenland gambit are much more serious than the local seperatist conflict. We can not embolden the likes of Putin and his ilk in the least, and more than we can Iran...and in fact, IMHO, even less. This one is even more serious...and Putin knows it and it is why he is acting now on the eve of Bush's admin, close to an election, and during the Olympics.

Russia is not our enemy. We are not at war with Russia and have no reason to be.

Rewind 30 years: "The Soviet Union is not our enemy. We are not at war with the Soviet Union and have no reason to be."

Wrong. They are an Iranian-related people who are 70-80% Orthodox Christian, with the remainder Sunni. Their language, culture and ethnicity is not related to Russia.
