The American Tire Manufacturing Association said 4 million barrels can be saved per day. You don’t realize how many people drive around in vastly underinflated tires.

Do you have a linked source for that assertion? Does that cover just the US or the entire world? We use about 21 million bbls of oil a day, which means that we could save about 20% of our oil consumption. That is pure nonsense.

Further, how would we actually implement tire inflation improvement nationwide? Set up government-run “tire inflation” check points for people to drive into, to make sure they’re “doing their part”?

Whoops I did make a mistake. Here is the figure from google.

The U.S. Department of Energy says that American’s waste 3.56 million gallons of gas or $14.2 million in gas a day at $4 a gallon due to tire pressure. For every penny increase in the gas price, an additional $35,600 is lost in low tire pressure gas loss in America.

There are figures of 2.8 million gallons/day based on the highest range estimate of 10% underinflated in the whole fleet likely on the road daily.

The real number is more apt to be around 600-700 thousand bbl/day of crude.

4.4 million bbl/day is ridiculous. If this number were to represent the high range of 10% then it would stand to reason that the other 90% was used as well for 39.6 million bbl/day which is twice the total used for all petroleum uses.
