A Sherman wasn’t a match for a Mark IV with the long barreled 75mm gun. The gun [both variants] was inferior to it. Mark IIIs they could handle.
Except this wasn't the DD.
You just prompted me to look over the specs for the Mark IV. The later varients that you mentioned had much heavier armor than the early versions. Probably sacrificed some mobility though I notice that they increased the track width ever so slightly.
I love Ontos. Load Sunday and shoot the rest of the week. Plus the major headache a 106 recoilless round will give you is guaranteed to spoil your whole day! Yours is a great pic. By the time I enlisted (67) they were on their way out if not totally gone.
DD = Die Drowning?
Some truth to that, but Dual Drive (tracks for land, propellers for use in the water.
Jeez.
Sure you aren't thinking of this reported engagment between a King Tiger and a Pershing?

I remember seeing some on the roads around Chu Lai in 66 or 67.
Ontos Bump.
Follow the link in post No 50. That site has good scoop on how they were used in Vietnam. My job was to run the Machine Shop and fabricate replacement parts as necessary. I worked with the Allis-Chalmers engineering section and learned a lot.
Read the link. NICE article by the Aussies!
Yeah, I guess they were in-country until ‘69. I was on the airfield at Phu Bai so I guess I missed them... even flying over the countryside... Oh, well. I’d love to have one now though. With that .50 cal spotting rifle and the message IT sends to your target... “If you don’t like ME, you’re damned sure not gonna like who’s coming NEXT!” I also liked the Mechanical Mule, which could have a 106 recoilless mounted on it. 106 was a lovely weapon. I recall hearing about one of the 5th Marines 106 teams hauling one to the second story of a house in Hue during Tet 68. They forgot about the backblast and blew out the whole back wall of the house when it went off.
