Eric Cantor, 45, would be a dramatic choice for Mr McCain, who is running almost level with Barack Obama in national polls but whose aides believe he needs to shake-up the White House race if he is to prevail in November's general election.
Aides to Mr McCain revealed that Mr Cantor, the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives, had been asked to submit documents as part of a rigorous vetting process to hunt out any closet skeletons.
He joins a shortlist believed to include Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor and Mr McCain's bitter rival during the Republican primaries, Tim Pawlenty, Minnesota governor, and Rob Portman, a former Ohio congressman and budget director in the Bush administration.
Of the four, Mr Cantor would be by far the most exiting - though potentially risky - choice. A prodigious fundraiser with a young, photogenic family, support from evangelical Christians and strong backing from hard-line conservatives, he would shore up many of Mr McCain's weaknesses.

McCain needs a Governor, not another Senator or a Represenative. Mike Rounds of South Dakota would fit the bill nicely. He’s young, charismatic, and a solid conservative with two terms under his belt.
Someone in the know, please fill us in on Cantor. His resume looks very impressive.
Would he satisfy the religious right? I am the religious right and I can say that a Jewish nominee would satisfy me, but I may be atypical.
The was a very good thread about this yesterday. If you can locate it, there are posts re: his voting record, etc., and a good discussion of whether he is experienced and accomplished enough to be VP.
What an odd headline.
I’m sorry, none of these obscure picks will make a dent in the general.
Mitt is the only one who has some profile and is absolutely murder on the opposition on the stump.
Pick some obscure guy from a small remote state with no upside is not the answer.
Mitt is the best choice as he can absolutely blow the Rats out of the water no matter how much time you give him in any forum. I’ve seen him do so on behalf of McCain several times. He’s very, very effective.
My concnern also is that the media after a short window of coverage will pretty much ignore an obscure candidate. McCain himself can’t get 30 seconds on the news unless he is mentioning Obama by name.
This is going to be uphill all the time till November. Why make it harder?
Ping!
I am also Religious Right and I also would get behind Cantor (read the other thread on him), although I have my doubts about picking a Congressman for Veep. Cantor is a religious Jew (unlike some Democrat Marxists with Jewish names), a staunch conservative and supporter of the WoT and most importantly, on the other thread a knowledgeable Freeper said that his electorate has a lot of Evangelicals. So there might be an indication.
"Mr Cantor would be by far the most exiting"
I don't think that that was a typo. Obama buffs scream "Racist!" at everything in their field of vision. It's what they do.
Once someone tells them of the blackface crooner Eddie Cantor they'll go into a frenzy accusing McCain of "appealing" to racists who want to bring back those days and Mr. Cantor will have to exit.
that will go over well with our muslim population.
We certainly need a fresh Generation of Conservatives in the prime league. I don't know whether his prime time has come yet, but imagine him 2016 on a ticket with Jindal for example.
Cantor lost his cousin to an Islamic Jihad terrorist in Israel and supports withdrawing all financial aid to the Palestinian Authority. He’ll give the islamofascists hell for sure.
Look for all the latent, and not-so-latent Jew haters at DU and the Daily KOS to come crawling out of the sewer if McCain selects Cantor.
He sounds great, but on the other hand Mitt brings so much more to the table.
