Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.
Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi's refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m. and are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.
At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on, and the microphones were turned on shortly afterward.
But C-SPAN, which has no control over the cameras in the chamber, has stopped broadcasting the House floor, meaning no one is witnessing this except the assembled Republicans, their aides, and one Democrat, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), who has now left.
Only about a half-dozen Republicans were on the floor when this began, but the crowd has grown to about 20 now, according to Patrick O'Connor.
"This is the people's House," Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. "This is not Pelosi's politiburo."
Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker's Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.
"You're not covering this, are you?" complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans "morons" for staying on the floor.

202-225-0100 and let Nancy and her idiotic message boy know to turn the lights back on because America is watching.
And... of course... CSPAN is not covering this.
We need a list of the twenty Congress critters who are staying on, so we can send them thank you cards...
That is beautiful.
Somebody needs to get an internet camera hookup in there and broadcast this stuff to the country. Let everybody see how the Pelosi Democrats shut down debate and leave the country’s economy in the lurch to go on their fabulous vacations. Is Pelosi using her taxpayer-supplied jet to head back to the wine country and her multimillion dollar estate?
Grrrr.
This is hilarious. I’m pleased with this turn of events.
I’m seething at Pelosi. Someone needs to just slap her down. SLAP her down like a dog.
Keep up the pressure!! Tell everyone you know about this. Americans needs to know that Peolsi stands in the way of lower gas prices. She is taking away our representation by not allowing a vote.
“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”
Man I would have *loved* to have seen that!
But C’mon...Surely there are Video cameras the Republicans can bring in, to record this Revolt against this Tyrannical
overthrowing of the will of the People, of their Constitutional representatives..by the usurpers Pelosi and Reid and their “ruling class” ilk???
I’m enjoying this immensely, too. I’d love to see them start a sit-in, bring in sleeping bags, and let the Capitol Police try to throw them out. It’s particularly funny that Pelosi has her little drudges running around trying to keep the media from covering it.
Bush should call Congress back into session
Why won’t President Bush call a Special Session. Is there some strategy here such as the Dems geting blamed in the Fall or just that Bush doesn’t want the open conflict?
A conservative sit-in in the making.....If I lived near Washington I’d drive there and show my support. The pond scum democrats are screwing America!!!
All the conservatives in DC ARE in the capitol building right now.
I think it’s something like 9:1 liberal to conservative ratio in DC. Or maybe it’s Democrat to Republican but still.
Great YouTube footage on Instapundit of Mitch McConnell making a series of unanimous consent requests regarding drilling and increasing the trigger price every time there was a Demo objection. He gets all the way to ten bucks a gallon. Pretty funny stuff, right out of the Demo playbook.
