McCain isn't the nominee yet. If he is, he appeals to moderates and independents who will decide the election.
McCain is the nominee. Only his own stepping aside or dying can change that. Enough people continued to vote for him so that he has enough delegates bound by state laws to force a win on the first ballot. If Romney and Huckabee had remained in the race a while longer, this would not be true. It quite likely would not be true if just Huckabee had remained in the race.
