(BEIJING) -- China's government said it evacuated the last town to be submerged under the giant reservoir created by the Three Gorges Dam, bringing the project another step closer to its final height of 578 feet.
Authorities have dismantled the last of 988 households in the town of Gaoyang, in central China's Hubei province, and cleared related garbage, ending a process that began four years ago, state-run media reported Wednesday.
The residents of Gaoyang join some 1.4 million others who have been evacuated to make way for the world's largest hydroelectric project. With the dam structure already completed, authorities have been raising the reservoir's level in stages. It now stands at 515 feet above sea level and will rise to its maximum height by next year.
The dam was designed to tame the violent floodwaters of the Yangtze River and create a new source of clean energy for China's fast-growing economy. But critics say the enormous dam has created new problems, such as worsening pollution along the Yangtze and exacerbating the threat of landslides in the geologically unstable region around the reservoir.
The government has acknowledged some of the problems created by the dam. It has spent some $1.6 billion to shore up the banks, plus billions more in building a network of garbage and sewage treatment plants to clean up the reservoir, which is a major source of drinking water for millions who live in the region. But some critics fear those efforts won't be enough to stem the damage.
The government has said that it will encourage millions more people to leave from the densely populated periphery of the reservoir and the poor mountainous regions nearby, and relocate to the urban center of Chongqing, a large city about 400 miles west of the dam. The new migration is......
