Why didn’t anyone get a photo of him coming out of the elevator in the lobby (or even with their cell phone camera as he stepped into the stairwell in the basement)?

Better yet, doesn’t the hotel have surveillance cameras all over the place? But of course, discretion is the better part of revenue, and hotels still have to answer to John Smiths.
