These city playgrounds aren't for child's play.
Black rubber mats designed to break a child's fall turn blistering hot in the summer, soaring to higher than 165 degrees, a Daily News investigation found.
Doctors at two city hospital burn units reported seeing 16 to 18 young children with playground burns a year, mostly from the mats under junglegyms and sliding boards.
"I have nightmares," said Anne Casson, whose toddler son, Will, ditched his shoes at Carl Schurz Park on the upper East Side one day last May.

I don’t think I have ever been described as a liberal. But yes, children or anyone else throwing sand is bad. Apparently the kids aren’t as evil now as when you were one, ‘cuz sand lots quickly become turd lots.
I am not particularly keen on the rubber mats either, but the customer is always right. I prefer the in-place pours, rubber mulch covered with a half inch elastomeric coating or just plain old-fashioned mulch. It has nothing to do with being a liberal.
It is about providing a service to a customer in what has become a ridiculously litigious society. One injury can mean big dollar settlements or jury awards. It is thought of as school money and city money, but it isn’t. It is your money, my money, the taxpayers money. Daycares are small enterprises and only ever one ambulance-chaser away from being out of bidness. I have only contracted for sand fill twice and the last was 5 years ago. Parents despise sand.

They just condemned Houston’s Astrodome (essentially). The Fire Marshall called it dangerous and it will take $30million to make it right.
Of course he’s applying criteria that the building has never had to meet in 45 years history.

I grew up in Tucson, AZ. We didn’t have 4 and 5. We did have the County Landfill and cherry bombs that gave us hours of enjoyment.

I am about your age. We played with rattlesnakes and other fun desert critters. My brother got bit by a Western Diamondback. Maybe my parents should have sued the state of Arizona.
