Angry parents remove dangerously overheated playground mats

These city playgrounds aren't for child's play.

Black rubber mats designed to break a child's fall turn blistering hot in the summer, soaring to higher than 165 degrees, a Daily News investigation found.

Doctors at two city hospital burn units reported seeing 16 to 18 young children with playground burns a year, mostly from the mats under junglegyms and sliding boards.

"I have nightmares," said Anne Casson, whose toddler son, Will, ditched his shoes at Carl Schurz Park on the upper East Side one day last May.

Rubber mats? When I was a kid playgrounds were CONCRETE. And you could fry an egg on them in the summer.

Dirt? Oh how we wished we had dirt.

All we had were big piles of old, rusty razor blades.

And we were glad to have them!

Growing up, our playgrounds were covered with punji stakes and venomous snakes and we still had a good time.

Kids are so spoiled today.

Yes. I used to shinny up the pole at one end of the giant swing set, and then monkey-swing my way across the length of the top bar and down the other side.

Over hot, black asphalt.

Well, the trial lawyers are going to love this one! Damned if they do, and damned if they don’t. Probably the best solution is to close down all the playgrounds!

That's nothing. Our rusty razor blades were mixed with unexploded ordnance.

You had a play ground? Why, when we were kids, we lived in a shoebox along the side of the road, and before school, we awoke every morning at 4 to sweep the streets. AND we were thankful!

Um, why don’t they put some nice, fluffy white SAND on these playgrounds?
I assume they are already fenced, which would keep the cats out of the sand....

Here’s and idea parents. Make sure your kids dont take their shoes off when it’s 95 degrees outside. In order to accomplish this you must put down the cell phone and pay attention.

Good - The city was practicing CYA by installing mats
Bad - Black rubber mats will end up causing burns

My town park uses recycled rubber in a pretty shade of terra cotta that’s been shredded to look like mulch. Safe and no burns.

Someone is objecting to black rubber mats?

That’s racist.
