"Teen recounts sexual assaults by older kids at Sunnyvale Middle School ... Throughout much of last school year, a pack of eighth-graders repeatedly threatened to sexually attack the younger students before and after class."

"Sunnyvale ISD already has reacted to the case. Starting this fall, students will be required to take a "values-based" class to help them make good choices. And the athletic locker room will be reconfigured so coaches will always be able to see across the room at all angles."

" Coaches suspended some of the alleged attackers from athletics in April, but a few were back practicing football this summer at the school"

I'm not surprised that the wolfpack mentality occurs. Yes, it's horrible but I have no doubt that today's society is not solely the cause of it.

It's not the boys' behavior that's the problem, but how our society reacts. See the second two quotes.

"Values-based classes" and suspension. Big friggin' deal.

In the old days, the boys would have had the sh-t beat out of them. Nothing stops violent behavior from 13-16 year old boys than someone larger and stronger, with the correct motives, and with restraint, doing the same to them.

No. Today, we have "values-based" classes administered by women, for heavens sake, and expect that to restrain young men whose hormones and violent tendencies are out of control.

people scratch their heads and wonder why “Columbine”-type school shootings happen

I don't. I'd have killed people in high school, if I hadn't been afraid of the consequences. Kids who have grown up without consequences don't have that restraint.

Alright, I admit, when I read this I was thinking of Buffy, but a hellmouth is not necessary for this to happen (unless the town where I used to live also had one... which, in retrospect, would have explained a LOT. Deaths with weird circumstances and too-quiet cops and all that). *sigh* Getting back on topic, I think someone posted a more accurate racial breakdown later.

Whatever the facts, Sunnyvale ISD already has reacted to the case. Starting this fall, students will be required to take a "values-based" class to help them make good choices.

Ah. Problem solved...

Another reason to GET your kids out of GOVERNMENTAL SCHOOLS!! They are teaching about homosexuality in 2nd grade with books like Heather ghas 2 mommies and Daddy's Roommate.

Yes I do have 2 gay friends. I also know that they are well behaved. The school district needs to put a stop to these THREATS or if I was a parent there - I'd sue the school if my kid got raped. (Of course, my kid - when I have them - will be HOMESCHOOLED!!)

"...when did popping wet towels cease being the chief concern in the locker room?"

That's not so innocent as it may seem...a kid at my high school had his scrotum split open with a tightly wound rat tail (wet, rolled towel).

Either lock ‘em up for life or shoot the little bastards.

sorry disagree - I think the kids and his parents need to talked to... and if the kids are gay, let them start a GAY STRAIGHT ALLIANCE Club at school.

at my old school (before I was homeschooled) my friend did. (no, he is straight and the QB of our football team) but he wanted to help his friend - who was the running back on the team.

What these 5 boys need is prison and the rest of the kids could use some hard core classes in topics of “sin”, “Satan” and “hell”, as well as “The Ten Commandments”, “loving God and your neighbor” and “salvation and forgiveness through the grace of Jesus Christ”!

DISAGREE with you on the jail terms. Gay teens need a place where they can talk. sorry, but the school needs a GSA club. The kids do not need JAIL TIME!

What is the matter with these parents? What are they **thinking**?

I bet they sent their kids off to school - so they can get to their work so they can afford their TOYS (Like McMansions, BMWs, maids, trips to Hawaii or other exotic places, TV in every rooms...)!!

Time for parents to talk to their kids!!

I like to ski. It is amazing how many children on the ski lifts in some very expensive Western ski resorts attend government schools!

I also bet that their parents have Mc Mansions, BMWs, maids, and trips to Hawaii as well!

By giving these parents free education for their children, the taxpayer is subsidizing this lifestyle.

As you drive down the freeway, please notice the expensive new cars. Please glance up at the Mc Mansions on the hill. Every one of these parents can afford to pay tuition and give the rest of us a BREAK!

I think football should be privatized, and I think it would actually be more fun, better preparation for the kids, and have even more rah rah and community spirit behind it.

Couldn't the Parks and Recreation take over the teams? Couldn't the teams be sold and owned and run privately ?

I think they could be.

Government teachers and principals LOVE football. It generates support in the polling booth. It also guarantees students in the classroom. Because government is running monopoly farm team for the big leagues, students have little option but to attend the school if they have any chance to develop their talent.

Thankfully, in some states students can join the government monopoly athletic teams even if they are not attending the government school. Good! These is a step in the right direction toward making these teams community teams not just government school teams. Thanks to pressure from homeschoolers this is happening.
