That's not completely correct; proof of citizenship is what you must provide. BC, or naturalization papers, a report of American birth overseas, and so forth. For the latter, the only birth overseas that qualifies as “natural-born” is to children born to American citizens in US territories, protectorates or on US military installations, embassies etc.

All three of my foreign born children, who later became naturalized citizens, have valid US passports. When we adopted them, they were issued new US birth certificates listing us as their parents, although their birthplaces are listed as their countries of origin. When they were naturalized, they got papers which proved their citizenship. We needed those two documents to get their US passports.
Not one is considered a “natural born citizen,” and despite the fact that they are all brilliant, charming and conservative, none can ever be President of these United States, unless the Constitution is changed.
