Man Charged with Acting as Unregistered Agent of Iran
and Violating U.S. Sanctions on Iran
PHILADELPHIA – Laurie Magid, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, today announced the unsealing of an indictment charging Ali Amirnazmi, 64, of Berwyn, PA., with numerous crimes relating to his participation in illegal business transactions with Iran between in or about 1996 and in or about July 2008 and lying to federal officials about those transactions.
The charges against Amirnazmi include one count of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which makes it a crime to willfully violate U.S. sanctions on designated countries (i.e. Iran), four counts of violating IEEPA, one count of conspiracy to act in the United States as an agent of the Government of Iran without registering with the Attorney General, one count of acting in the United States as an unregistered agent of the Government of Iran, and three counts of making false statements to federal officials.
According to the indictment, Amirnazmi, a citizen of both the United States and Iran, engaged in numerous illegal business transactions and investments with companies located in Iran, including companies controlled in whole or in part by the Government of Iran, all of which are prohibited under U.S. government sanctions.
Amirnazmi was arrested this morning at his home in Berwyn.
If convicted of all charges, Amirnazmi faces a maximum sentence of 115 years imprisonment; a $5.5 million fine; 3 years supervised release; and $1,000 in special assessments.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stephen Miller.

Over 8,000 Children In Jails Of Punjab Province
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has said that there are 8,098 children in jails in the Pakistani province of Punjab. The HRCP is a non-governmental organization.
The Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Express quoted HRCP’s Hina Jilani as saying that among the children, one child was found to be eight years of age and another child had been sentenced for 84 years’ of imprisonment.

The director of Amnesty International in Algeria, Mehiedine Bechir, was arrested July 24 in Algeria.

MND-B Soldiers search for IRAM facilities, materials (Baghdad)
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO
JOINT SECURITY STATION UR, Iraq – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers conducted a presence patrol in northwest Baghdad July 21.
The patrol focused on disrupting the manufacturing of improvised rocket assisted mortars. They also worked with the local population to provide humanitarian assistance and security.
Soldiers with 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, searched and cleared a warehouse facility next to Sadr City looking for IRAM making materials.
These Soldiers spoke to locals and assessed their needs and concerns.
“There are lots of displaced families in this area who fled the violence and oppression inflicted upon them by Special Group criminals in Sadr City,” said 1st Lt. Matthew George, a platoon leader.
George said understanding the needs and concerns of the locals was crucial to achieving success in Iraq.
“These are very poor people and they have fled what was their home and, like us, all they want is a better life for themselves and their families,” he said.

MADRID (AFP) - Spanish police said Saturday they had arrested a 57-year-old Spanish woman they claim is the leader of the Spanish cell of Colombian Marxist rebel group FARC.
Maria Remedios Garcia Albert was arrested at her home in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, northeast of Madrid, they said.
The interior ministry said Garcia Albert had provided logistical support for FARC and had direct contacts with Raul Reyes, the FARC number two who was killed by Colombian troops inside Ecuador earlier this year.
Analysis of Reyes’ computer passed on to Spanish investigators by Colombian authorities had led them to identify Garcia Albert.
Garcia Albert travelled to secret camps in Colombia last year for “meetings with top leaders of the terrorist group,” according to the interior ministry.
She was discovered in possession of “several amounts of money” which she was preparing to send to representatives of FARC in Europe, the ministry said in a statement.
In Bogota, the director of the national police force General Oscar Naranjo welcomed the arrest as an important breakthrough in the investigation of the FARC’s links with Europe.
“This arrest is the start of a series of arrests which will take place in Europe, especially of people linked to the FARC,” he told Radio RCN in Bogota, describing Garcia Albert as a member of the FARC’s “international commission”.
He said Reyes’ computer files contained “a significant number of names of people living abroad, some of them Europeans and others Colombian.”
Using her position within a Spanish NGO, the Organisation of Solidarity for Asia, Africa and Latin Americas, Garcia Albert had “offered cover and logistical support in Spain to various leaders of the terrorist organisation ...
She was also tasked with coordinating contacts with FARC representatives in Switzerland and Sweden, it said.
