SENATOR BOB DOLE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SENATOR BOB DOLE STATEMENT
ON GENERAL WESLEY CLARK REMARKS
On CBSs Face the Nation (June 29, 2008), General Wesley Clark (Ret.) called Republican presidential candidate John McCain untested and untried, claimed that Senator McCain had no executive responsibility, belittled his leadership of a Naval unit because it wasnt a wartime squadron, and stated, I dont think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president. Senator Bob Dole issued the following statement:
The attack by General Wesley Clark on Senator John McCains war record and qualifications for the presidency is beyond comprehension. Clarks absurd remarks signal further erosion in our nations political discourse. He should have stayed in bed Sunday morning.
Its unfortunate that a former General who ran for the presidency on his own war record thinks it appropriate to attack a distinguished veteran and former prisoner-of-war in this way. Senator McCains entire life has been devoted to public service. His achievement and experience constitute unparalleled qualification for Americas highest office.

Rush pre-show tunes: “Lt. Kerry’s Purple Hearts Club Band”
I think that, unlike other former presidential contenders, McCain is not making his military service stand front and center. I could be wrong on this, please feel free to correct me - but what I've heard out of McCain is more policy-driven than "I fought in Vietnam, you know."
And frankly, the more I look at McCain, the more I like. Dunno if he's running to the center as a part of the election, but I'm hearing more and more good things (fiscal responsibilty, no socialized medicine, etc) come out of his mouth.
I don't like some of the bills he's authored in the Senate, though. I'm not sure if I should believe what I see now, or what his record has been.
