It's pretty awful now! Jhb is a war zone, to all intents and purposes, with daily shootings, home invasion robberies, and carjackings at a rate of 29 per day including Saturdays & Sundays.

Electrical power is a nightmare with daily power failures. Generators are in huge demand. The electrical company, ESCOM (government owned), is antiquated and cannot cope with the demand.

People live in fortresses, with the police utterly powerless. Security companies provide armed response and guarantee 3 minute response. The police are under-paid, under-manned, poorly trained and out-gunned.

2012? We may have to rethink that.

I had to stumble there a second. And decode that as Johanesburg (sp?). It brought to mind recent tales of Juarez Mexico.

My hispanic friends were warned against crossing the border for some cheap stylish leather shoes and the like. I said even in daytime and they said yes that the gangland murders are even happening in broad daylight.

41 people murdered last weekend.

Society is in total collapse. Not every nation but there is total surrender in some regions of the world to absolute lawlessness and corruption.
