And if you believe what the jackals of the DC Government are saying, DC residents aren’t going to (legally) have any practice time in the future. Peter Nickels, the DC “Attorney General,” was quoted in this morning’s Post as saying that DC residents will not be able to take their guns out of the home, although there will be “carefully drafted regulations” permitting (requiring?) them to take their guns to police stations for registration. So, unless a DC resident has a shooting range in his basement, he is out of luck in terms of getting practice time. Naturally the DC pols have got to make sure the gangbangers maintain their edge.

So what would be the charges for owning and using an unregistered gun? If there are no stores to buy a gun in D.C., wouldn’t it be possible to beat the rap in court with this? (Eventually maybe, after multiple appeals, huh, lol)

I would be happy to forgo an automatic weapon, just to have a nice 357 pistol. I bought a home in DC in the late 60’s before the current ban was in effect. In the first 8 years I lived there here is the history of guns and death within a block of my house.

Killed: *A man came to his mothers house for Thanksgiving. He and another man argued over a parking place. Mother and daughter came out to see. Guns drawn, shots fired, both men and one woman dead. *A man came home from Vietnam, went to his house, found another man with his wife. The interloper and possibly the wife killed. *Argument in parking lot, two shot dead. *Kindly woman neighbor took in a troubled teen. His uncle got out of jail. They robbed and murdered (no gun) the woman. The neighbors spotted them climbing over the fence with her TV. *In a large apartment building the owner let his son use a room in the basement while at college. Son raped and strangled an 11 year old girl, and was caught trying to stuff her body into the furnace. This murderer was a white upper class kid from the suburbs. All the other killers and victims were black.

Saved: *There had been 3 rapes nearby. Finally, a woman pulled out a gun from under a pillow and killed the man climbing onto her bed. No more rapes in the neighborhood. *A neighbor spotted man climbing up the fire escape beside his house. He got his gun and chased the potential criminal away.

Not in my neighborhood, but illustrative of why it might be appropriate to require gun owners to know something of the law: A woman came home late at night and was fumbling with her key trying to unlock the front door. Her father heard the noise and shot and killed her through the locked door. DC law requires that a criminal be approaching the victim and a direct threat before you can shoot them. No shooting in the back as they run away. Of course, a recent ruling in Texas regarding shooting criminals robbing a neighbor might change this.

Actually Spike Lee was quoting the band Parliament Funkadelic and George Clinton with their song about white fear of black encroachment “Chocolate City”. Give it a listen. It is funny and funky.

"Are we now going to encourage shoot-outs between criminals who may be very experienced with guns and homeowners who aren't?"

Obviously, Ms. Norton believes the public is better served by being unarmed in the face of a shoot-out with criminals who are very experienced with guns.

In the long run, the DC court system will most likely side with the attacker and not the victim. I can just see it now: "Mr. Plaintiff, you shot the would-be robber in the face and he will have years and years of physical therapy, plastic surgery and mental health assistance -- therefore, you will be sued up the ying-yang in civil court to help pay for these costs." Damn if you do.... Damn if you don't....

I'm beginnig to think we need someone to do some research and see if we can figure out what it is about the beltway that makes people stupid.

So DC is a city full of “skilled thugs”. Who knew??

I was surprised to learn that some of them actually work outside of the Senate.

Yes. Because they already have guns. The law abiding residents don't because they follow the law.

Had they been able to excercise their Constitutional right, perhaps they'd be as skilled as the thugs.

I wonder if the SCOTUS will have to smack them down again at some point in the future.

No, because transporting handguns across state lines violates federal law. To legally obtain a handgun, someone from the District would have to drive to a store in Virginia or Maryland, which, after doing the requisite background check, would have to ship the gun to a federally licensed store in D.C. And so long as no stores exist in D.C., of course, that’s not going to happen.

However, somebody who already owns firearms, and decides to move into DC may now do so. It is also possible for a DC resident to move out of DC to Virginia, buy a firearm, and then at a later date move back in

False. While there are restrictions on interstate PURCHASES, it's different for transport of a gun you already legally own. You may legally transport a handgun from any place where you may legally possess it, to any other place where you may legally possess it (which now includes DC)

Per the ATF, page 178:

(B12) May a person (who is not an alien) who resides in one State and owns property in another State purchase a handgun in either State?

If a person maintains a home in 2 States and resides in both States for certain periods of the year, he or she may, during the period of time the person actually resides in a particular State, purchase a handgun in that State. However, simply owning property in another State does not qualify the person to purchase a handgun in that State.

If a person maintains an apartment in DC, and a 2nd home in Virginia, he can legally buy in Virginia and bring it into DC

Silvie, mindless idiot was my first thought.

Let’s see under Norton’s so-called delegate status, Washington,DC has achieved:

-a majority of adults in DC are illiterate
- the highest per pupil cost in the US.
- a murder rate making Washington, DC more dangerous than a combat zone in 2008.
- the most corrupt city in the US; $40 million embezzled from the Property Tax Office; Another $1/2 million from another tax office down the hall; Outright theft of millions from the Teachers Retirement System. Many DC contracting payoffs to insiders. And so on, and on.

She is an embarrassment and needs to just go.
It’s also an embarrassment and defies imagination when the news media asks this incompetent for a comment.

However, because, as the court says, there never was a ‘right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever for whatever purpose,’ -Eleanor Holmes Norton

This idiot is 'willfully ignorant' to the nth degree... just believes as she wants to believe, ignoring the facts. I asssume she is capable of reading the Constitution, and I am certain she is incapable of understanding its meaning.

People should be aware that gangs can get their representatives elected to local government.

That's how Barack Obama got to the Illinois State Senate.
