Interesting that the document lists his father’s “race” as “African”. To me, “African” is a nationality just like the terms “American”. “French” or “British.” How was race described in 1961?

Interesting that the document lists his fathers race as African. To me, African is a nationality just like the terms American. French or British. How was race described in 1961? Since this is a new print from computer records, someone may have done a global replace changing all references of Negro or Colored or Black to African in the database.
