The debate is on: The widely circulated photograph of Barack Obama on a bicycle this last weekend either did the presidential candidate no favors, or actually helped his cause.
In an article in today's New York Daily News, writer David Saltonstall shows no mercy, declaring: "It wasn't a pretty picture: ill-fitting jeans, a tucked-in golf shirt, black-and-white socks and a helmet that could make Michael Dukakis blush."
A weekend in Chicago spent by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama included a bicycle ride with his family Yet in comments to Saltonstall, some Big Apple fashionistas cut Obama major slack. Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys New York, says: "I like seeing my politicians in goofy weekend attire. It means they're thinking about more important stuff."
Newsweek's Andrew Romano notes today that when the shot of Obama on the bike as part of an excursion with his family in Chicago "hit the wires, the heavily trafficked right-wing message boards of Free Republic went wild."
Those postings, as you can imagine, weren't complimentary toward Obama (but several were creative).
Romano, though, argues that the "bike moment" will be a plus for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee because it "makes him look like a normal, nerdy American dad."Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts went wind surfing during his 2004 presidential campaign

WHAT THE HECK is that silver thingy coming out of his butt?....BAWHAHHAHAHHA....a sKerry moment?
Clip your jeans?
When my little one grabs me and says “Lets go for a bike ride” I don’t have time to do anything fancy like “clip” my jeans. I usually just grab a short piece of 3/8” rope and tie it around my ankle. Maybe it’s my “Jethro Clip”.
:-)
I don’t even own a pair of shorts.
Dude, you need to get out more. White folk don't have a "bike riding uniform". My vet friends and I take pride in riding with Americans, even those who are not pigment challenged. Hate or vote against Obama because of policies you disagree with. Don't play the race card it diminishes your argument.
Stop,Heeheeee
Flobots!!!
“Post a picture so we can see if you tuck in the shirt, cinch the belt really tight and look goofy”
...can’t cinch the belt tight....had a late lunch of fried calf’s liver smothered in onions, fried okra, mashed potatoes&gravy, stewed cabbage, corn bread and 2 glasses of sweet tea....reckon if I nibbled on salmon/steamed brocholi/organic tea like Obama my belt would have shorter notches...until then, bring on the down home cookin’!!
I rode bikes on a few military installations in my day and did not have to wear a helmet(early eighties). But being ordered to wear one is somewhat different from electively wearing one for a slow spin around the block.JMHO
I learned to love “Sweet Tea” while stationed at Barksdale AFB. I can't find it in the Northern Tier region. One of these days I'm gonna “google” a recipe!
BTW; I though Obama just wanted to eat his waffle...
Many conservatives are now suffering from the left wing decease: Blinded Hate.
Yeah, it’s th eflat rear tire that makes the picture fit Obama perfectly.
Riding on, oblivious...
You're an optimist.
“Are you also clinging to your guns and a bible????”
....yes indeed....got my eye on a little .380 auto right now for my concealed carry.....need to add to my current battery of 2 pistols, 2 rifles and 6 shotguns.....still hold with the King James Version of the Bible that was given to me 53 years ago.
Here in Oregon it’s the law that all children MUST wear a helmet when they ride bicycles, even if they’re just riding down the street.
It’s so sad, I see all these kids, everywhere they go on bikes, and they will never know the joy of riding a bike with the wind rushing past your hair.
Good ol’ Oregon...nanny state supreme.

That looks like an anti-leapfrog bar. Real handy when biking in the Castro district.
I like the methane converter on the back of the bike. Obama may not know beans but he doesn’t waste ‘em.
I enlisted in '82 and retired under Bush II. Times and standards change. When I go through the gate now there is a sign directing you to use your "hands-free". I say this to say standards of military discipline change with the times. To proclaim Americans wearing bicycle helmets as the "Sissification of America" is just plain ignorant. Fight Obama on his policies not silly pictures. We can do better. I used to think so anyway.
