In the 1960s, one of the key rallying points that led to the organization of the modern liberal movement was resistance to the military draft and the Vietnam War.
But Jeremy Scahill, a fellow at the liberal Nation Institute and author of Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army, a book highly critical of the defense contractor, took a very ironic stance on the reinstitution of a draft in a recent appearance. He blamed the governments reluctance to use a military draft for the rise of private defense contractors.
It [the governments use of Blackwater and other contractors] also helps to keep a draft off the table, Scahill said June 5 at Busboys & Poets books shop in Arlington, Va. I can almost guarantee you if there were a draft in this country, people would stop watching Britney Spears checking into rehab clinic and would probably be out in the streets because many, many more U.S. citizens would be coming back in body bags.

We don’t need a draft, idiot. We need more Americans who are WILLING and VOLUNTEER to lay their lives on the line for their country, and thank you to all our fine servicemen watching our 6 in the civilian world.
No secret that the liberals want the draft re-instituted. They associate the draft with angry street protests against the Vietnam War and look to such unrest to curb future American military options. For such people, US power is always the greatest evil in the world, regardless of facts or reality.
Precisely why a draft can probably never be re-instituted - one of the two major political parties will use it to subvert the very war effort that needed conscripts in the first place. The exception might be if there is a democrat President with enough political support to be able to crush antiwar dissent as Wilson and FDR did.
I have two sons graduating from high school in a week....and both have been sworn into the Army. One active duty, one in the Reserves. They will be joining their oldest brother who is a Captain in the Army, Iraq veteran, Bronze Star recipient.
This family steps up.
God Bless Your Family. My cousin serves in South Korea, where one of his duties is to make sure no NOkor soldier gets over a certain line...
BlackWater could quickly fill the gap during wartime for trained trustworthy body guards who had millions of dollars worth of training by offering a premium and charging the government via contracts. Thank God.
If our country would pay these guys what they are worth they would most likely stay in the military. JMO
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. George Orwell
Tell your boys thanks and our prayers will be with them.
The liberals want the draft because they’re trying to recreate their glory days of the late ‘60s, and they can’t understand why the masses aren’t marching in the streets with them.
They finally figured out that folks weren’t marching out of sympathy, but out of fear, and without the draft, there is no fear.
Blackwater, Triple Canopy and Dyncorp are all doing things the military doesn’t want to do..never did. One of the main missions is protecting all the civilians(State Dept,CIA,AID etc.) They are well paid, but are still cheaper than the military for the same job, because they have only 401k, no retirement benefits, lifetime health etc.
Plus..they have no job security. One little screw up and they are on the chopper out. Plus they also work in countries where we don’t have a war going on.
Most are former elite military and LEO’s. They most are doing boring, dangerous jobs that require the right training and high security clearances(something BHO couldn’t get). They are treated like dirt by the people they guard..State Dept weiners.
A member of my family, SF Veteran of Afghan is working for one of them now and has served in Afghan, Iraq and countries unnammed.
I suggest that where we need the draft is for the civiliam jobs that are needed in Iraq and Afghan.
PLUS why would you have the draft and dirty the water with putrid liberal scums in hiding, just itching to place the lives of solid, loyal American soldiers in harms way just to serve their lefty agendas?
We’re doing fine right now when it comes to recruitment. We had a hiccup for March this year but overall, our armed services have been meeting their quotas remarkably for the past 5 years.
Heck, when I went with BW, keeping me alive was their primary focus. It's a nice feeling rolling with half-a-dozen former SF guys whose jobs is to watch YOUR a$$.
When I went with the military, I often felt like a fifth wheel who could only get in the way (which was sorta true). Further, let's face it, junior enlisted guys in most units do not spend their time on PSD training.
When I went with the Brits, I spent most of my time gaping in awe at the age of their kit. Wonderful guys, but the UK's MoD should be taken to task for sending their men out there so ill-equipped (SAS and others elite units excepted).
God bless you, Sir. And all the best to your brave lads.
Hearing something like this should make all of us pause and remember that as long as men such as these exist our country will prevail against it’s enemies, both foreign and domestic.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Why is it that those who want the draft re-instated are liberals?
Thank you for raising such fine young men.
What pride I feel for our military! While watching PBS’ Lawrence Welk’s tribute to the Armed Forces just now, each branch of the Services was recognized. As veterans stood, I saw a few tears....some of them were mine.
A grateful nation, yes. We appreciate those who step up and serve.
Great job!!
“many more U.S. citizens would be coming back in body bags.
If we eliminated the use of contractors and used military personnel, wouldn’t the number of body bags approximate the number of KIAs for contractors? Illogical.
Because they want to enact "quotas" big time in the military, and destroy the military from within.
