“Navies to tackle Somali pirates”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: The UN Security Council has unanimously voted to allow countries to send warships into Somalia’s territorial waters to tackle pirates.
The resolution permits countries that have the agreement of Somalia’s interim government to use any means to repress acts of piracy for the next six months.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Somalia’s coastal waters are near shipping routes connecting the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, and the country’s government is unable to police its own coastline.
Aid agencies say 6,000 civilians have died in the past year in Mogadishu
Consequently, piracy is rife off Somalia’s 1,800 mile-long coast, says the BBC UN correspondent Laura Trevelyan.”

“Saudi Human and Women’s Rights Activist Wajeha Al-Huwaidar Speaks Out Against Honor Killings”
SNIPPET: “On April 7, 2007, a teenage Yazidi Kurdish girl named Du’a Al-Aswad was stoned to death by a lynch-mob in Iraq, because she had violated her family’s honor. A video of the stoning, filmed by the participants themselves using their mobile phones, was posted on http://leilamagazine17.blogspot.com/2008/02/blog-post_6785.html .
A year after the stoning, Saudi reformist and human rights activist Wajeha Al-Huweidar wrote a scathing article in which she harshly criticized the sexist character of Arab culture and particularly the phenomenon of “honor killings.”
The following are excerpts from her article, which appeared on the reformist website www.aafaq.org.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RELEASE No. 20080603-01
June 3, 2008
Iraqi source leads Soldiers to massive cache west of Samarra
Multi-National Division North PAO
TIKRIT, Iraq An Iraqi source-driven search in the al-Jazeera Desert west of the city of Samarra led Soldiers to an underground storage room containing thousands of pounds of weapons and munitions, June 2.
Earlier in the day, the Soldiers received information from local Iraqi Security Forces of a large quantity of weapons and munitions located within a 40-ft. well in the desert near the city.
The large room was revealed after numerous attempts to locate the cache. After digging six feet into the ground, Soldiers noticed a large crevasse leading into the rooms entrance.
What is unique about this cache was the large amount of serviceable munitions, said Capt. Chris Barlow, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment. Most of our cache finds turn up old, rusted weapons and munitions, but 90-95 percent of this cache consisted of readily usable and serviceable items.
According to Barlow, commander of Coalition Soldiers responsible for the area, this cache and many others like it was located solely because of information flow that is occurring as a result of the increased security in Samarra.
The security inside the population centers here has driven the people here to offer up a wealth of intelligence, he said. You have to have the help from the local citizens to be able to locate a cache in an area as desolate as this.
