U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says the city of Chicago will receive $9.6 million from the federal government to buy hybrid buses.
Durbin said Friday that the grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will allow the Chicago Transportation Authority to buy about 13 more articulated diesel hybrid buses.
In March, the CTA announced plans to lease 150 hybrid buses at the cost of $13.4 million a year.
Hybrid buses burn less gas than conventional diesel buses.

Gee, what a great deal. These buses only cost $738,000 apiece? What a money-saving bargain. I’m glad they’re putting my tax money to such good use!

Years ago Chicago had one of the best surface and elevated transit systems. It was all electric. No pollution from busses, streetcars and subway and elevated trains. Then the idiots in government began to “fix” it. Now here we ago again. God save the Republic.

“Hybrid buses burn less gas than conventional diesel buses.”
Quite a feat since diesel buses don’t burn any gas.

geeze...how old are you ? they started phasing out the streetcars/electric buses when I was a little kid...the last one ran in the late 50’s.

Must be about our age. I also remember the phase-out of the streetcars in Chicago. At least the overhead wires were gone.
Remember a few years back when they had the natural gas powered buses? I guess they didn’t last too long; probably maintenance-related issues.
