Webster and MacDowell fail to note that a clean Super Hornet; no tanks and no pods, can't break Mach 1 under 10,000 feet.

I never heard that, and consider myself somewhat knowledgeable about aviation...is that true????

That’s hearsay from what I’ve read on the issue. There is no physical reason why it shouldn’t.

I have a feeling that they are confused with the regulation preventing aircraft from going supersonic over land (don’t know exactly what the rule is in the US, but here in Canada it’s at all, over there it might be under 10,000ft). Aerodynamically it should be possible.
