Hudson was actually losing parts because it was such a poorly kept secret that he was gay that the studios feared it would hit the papers. Wayne gave Hudson the part at a time that it really saved his career. From what I understand, Wayne didn't endorse Hudson's lifestyle, but also didn't pay much attention to it either.
