Years ago a very good friend lost both his legs to diabetes. In fairly short order he was walking again on prosthetics, and surprisingly soon without even a cane, going up and down stairs with more ease than me (with my new bifocals).
And standing upright, he still stood taller than the rest of us.

My grandmother has a friend that was a liberal professor. He divorced his wife and left her and the kids. Then the diabetes started. He had his legs amputated ... then remarried his wife, started running, became the best grandfather, and became flaming right-winger and caring individual.
